![]() Faleh Bughenaim celebrates aboard Silawi after the Canadian International. |
The $750,000 Canadian International (G1) features top older horses going 1 1/2 miles around 3 turns of the bet365 Inner Turf Course at Woodbine, as the main E.P. Taylor course is closed until next summer for renovation on the backstretch section. It was unusually warm for early October in Toronto with sunny skies and a race time temperature of 26.4 C (79.5 F), with the turf rated firm (GoingStick reading of 11.4). Celebrating its 85th renewal this year, the International was last run 2 years ago, left off the stakes schedule in 2024 due to shipping issues from Europe, but returned this year in order to retain its Grade 1 rating.

Left: Silawi in the winner's circle. Winning trainer Hamad Al Jehani said, "Silawi is a frontrunner, and with this racecourse, I think with a tighter track, I think you got a huge advantage if you are in front, and we know that the Godolphin horse (Nations Pride), he's a nice horse, and if we decide to make a different plan, it will be hard to beat him. So, we take that advantage to go forward, and we make the pace from the beginning and follow the plan very well, and I think he deserves to be here in the winning enclosure today."
Right: Faleh Bughenaim celebrates with the trophy. Bughenaim said, "It is a lucky day for me (to pick up the mount) Daniel (Tudhope, originally named to ride) told me he cannot get the flight and Hamad gave me a chance to ride. He's one of the best horses we have in our yard in Newmarket, and Hamad and his assistant believe Silawi can do great races. He gave me a nice Group 1 (win) in Canada, and I was happy it worked out."

Left: Silawi in the paddock. Al Jehani, who also trains 5th place finisher Haunted Dream added, "It's not a surprise because I feel from the beginning when we start to do the entry. I believed if Silawi came to Woodbine Racecourse, he can show greater performance. So, the trainer is not always right, but today I'm right, so it's a great result for the team. That result, it's not coming from Hamad Al-Jehani alone – it's coming from all the team."

Left: Silawi leads first time by. Bughenaim added, "He won a Group 3 in England. Today, we went up two steps with him to a Grade 1. I had orders to go a nice pace with him. From the middle of the bend, I asked him to go, and he accepted that."

It was another neck back to Western Whirl third, while favorite Bring Theband Home checked in last of 7 beaten just 3 1/2 lengths.

Left: No Nay Hudson in the winner's circle. Winning jockey Pablo Morales said, "If you happen to go back and watch the head-on, the inside horse breaks out really, really hard, and I got pinched bad out of there, crossing heels for a couple of jumps, so I had no other choice but to take a little hold and take Plan B."
Right: No Nay Hudson gets hosed off after the race. Morales added, "I felt that they were flying, so I felt like I had a really good shot to win this. I kind of let my horse get it straight underneath, and in the turn picked it up and I'm thinking, 'I'm going to get this because they have to come back a little bit. I have tons of horse, so the horse will outrun them in the end, and I'll finish them.'"

Left: Second place finisher Nobals in the paddock. The Larry Rivelli trainee improved his record to 12 wins, 6 seconds, and 1 third in 29 starts, earning $1,842,240 for owner Patricia's Hope.

It was another 2 1/2 lengths back to late-running Ready for Shirl third.

Left: Breath Away in the winner's circle. Lee Vickers, assistant to winning trainer Miguel Clement said, "She was very smart in her first couple of starts around Gulfstream, where you really need a turn of foot, and she's demonstrated that again on numerous occasions. Today, I think [Civaci] gave a great ride from the one-hole, saved every inch of ground and conserved that energy for that turn of foot late on, which was incredible. It was really good. When she's right, she's really, really good, and today she was right."
Right: Breath Away gets hosed off after the race.
