The $1 million Woodbine Mile (G1) celebrated its 30th renewal on Saturday afternoon. It features some of the best turf milers in North America and Europe looking for an automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland on October 31, under the Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" promotion, taking the one-turn mile trip over the recently renovated E.P. Taylor Turf Course. Conditions were typical for "Woodbine Turf Champions Day" with partly cloudy skies and a daytime high temperature of 24.7 C (76.5 F), with the turf course rated firm (GoingStick 11.1).

Jockey Kendrick Carmouche sent Deterministic to set the pace through fractions of 24.36, 47.89, and 1:10.73 while pressed by 19-1 fourth choice Gas Me Up and stalked by 39-1 Pierre. Turning for home, Deterministic continued to lead through 7f in 1:21.89 but favorite Notable Speech, 5th early, came out 5 wide for room and confidently ridden by William Buick, took over at the 1/16 pole to win going away by 1 1/4 lengths. It was another 2 lengths back to Gas Me Up third.

(Deterministic) had it fairly easy in front, but once Will got him out, he's got such a turn of foot. I was always pretty confident he was going to pick up. He's a very easy horse to deal with. I took the next best spot. He's a horse with a turn of foot, so I wasn't really that worried and just made sure we got some running room at the top of the straight."

Closing out the Saturday stakes sextet was the $750,000 E.P. Taylor Stakes (G1) for older fillies and mares going 1 1/4 miles on the turf and is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race in the Filly and Mare Turf division. A field of 8 made final entry with last year's runner-up Diamond Rain sent off as the 6-5 favorite off her Lyric Stakes win at York after finishing a close second in the Hoppings (G3) at Newcastle. In to challenge her included 7-2 second choice Gimme a Nother, winner of 3 straight including the Beverly D (G2) at Colonial Downs, and 9-2 third choice See the Fire, third n the Nassau Stakes (G1) at York last out.

Jockey Javier Castellano sent 16-1 Achieve to the lead out of the clubhouse turn through easy fractions of 26.52, 51.77, 1:16.60, and 1:40.26 while pressed by 18-1 Venetian Lace and stalkd by 27-1 Somethinabouther and Gimme a Nother. Turning for home, Achieve tired badly as jockey John Velazquez sent Gimme a Nother between horses on the inside to gain the lead at the 1/8 pole. Kept to task by Velazquez, Gimme a Nother held off late-running See the Fire to win by a neck in 2:02.71. It was a nose back to 5-1 fourth choice Jancis third, while favorite Diamond Rain raced in fifth 3 1/2 lengths back early and held that position to the end finishing fifth beaten just 1 length.

Left: Gimme a Nother in the winner's circle. Winning trainer Graham Motion said, "I loved being in the 1-post. Johnny just had a beautiful trip. You have so much confidence when Johnny's riding. He said even today, she's a better horse than she was last time. She took him there. It was very impressive. She came to me undefeated. That was a lot of pressure, but she's been remarkable. We hoped to get her to the Breeders' Cup last year and it didn't quite work out. Ever since we gave her a little break over the winter, she's been unbeatable. She's very special."

Motion added, "I think for a horse to accomplish what she's done, you know, coming from South Africa, winning as many races as she has on two different continents – that's extraordinary. I mean, it speaks so much for South African breeding, so much for South African racing, and just goes to show they're amongst the best of our of our American bred horses."

Plus, I had to wait anyway. Once I saw the Godolphin horse coming in the outside, tried to follow the other Godolphin horse. Man, she responded right away. I was so pleased that when I asked, she went through that little hole there between the horses. I kept running. Very impressive."

Jockey Fraser Aebly sent Lupa to the lead first time by through fractions of 23.20, 46.83, and 1:11.37 while pressed by Serendipity and stalked by Fantastical. Turning for home Lupa opened up a 3 length lead through 1 mile in 1:36.49 and cruised the rest of the way to win by 3 1/4 lengths over favorite Fantastical in 1:43.38. It was another 2 3/4 lengths back to late-running 14-1 longest shot War Painter third.

Taylor Chapman, that gallops her in the morning as Lupa tries to run off every day and she eases her back every day. She's really taught her some manners, and it's starting to pay off. Today, she sure looked good on the synthetic. So, you know, I think she's a versatile horse, yes, but she does seem to really take to the surface."
