2019 Prince of Wales Stakes Entries

Post positions for the 2019 Prince of Wales Stakes.
Date: 07/19/2019

Entries were taken and post positions drawn on Friday in the walking ring at For Erie Racetrack for the 84th renewal of the $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes, the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. A field of only 5 three-year-olds were entered, with the first four finishers plus the 11th place beaten favorite from the Queen's Plate back for a rematch. As expected, Queen's Plate winner One Bad Boy, based in California but remained at Woodbine since that start, is the 7-5 morning line favorite, drawing the rail for trainer Richard Baltas. Before his Plate triumph he finished second in the Alcatraz Stakes at Golden Gate Fields, a turf race that was moved onto the main Tapeta. He had broken his maiden at 3rd asking in a Santa Anita turf race. Regular rider Flavien Prat gets the call again on Tuesday evening.

One Bad Boy winning the 2019 Queen's Plate
If One Bad Boy can win on Sunday, he will look for the Triple Crown sweep in three weeks time in the Breeders' Stakes back at Woodbine. Co-owner Brooke Hubbard said, "He's used to working on the dirt track at Santa Anita, he trains over it well. We know there is a lot of history to this track so we are super excited to be here. We are looking forward to taking on the Canadian Triple Crown, it's one of the main reasons we decided to stay in Canada." The Canadian Triple Crown is unique in that it shares the same distances as its American counterpart, but uses three different surfaces. The Queen's Plate was contested at 1 1/4 miles on Tapeta at Woodbine, Tuesday's Prince of Wales Stakes is a 1 3/16 mile dirt race at Fort Erie, and the final leg is the 1 1/2 mile Breeders' Stakes, one complete lap of Woodbine's E.P. Taylor Turf Course on August 17. Should he sweep, he will earn a $500,000 bonus sponsored by Ontario Lottery and Gaming.

Breaking next to him in post 2 is the 5-2 second choice, Ivan Dalos' homebred Avie's Flatter. Javier Castellano rides again for trainer Josie Carroll, off his 2nd place finish in the Plate after finishing 6th in the American Turf (G2) at Churchill Downs. After he worked 5f at Fort Erie last Thursday in 1:01.20, Carroll said, "Avie's Flatter skipped over the track and seemed very comfortable. He's a very consistent horse across every surface." Drawing post 5 is the 3-1 third choice Skywire, who finished a disappointing 11th in the Queen's Plate as the 2-1 favorite, after finishing 2nd in the Marine (G3). Regular rider Eurico Rosa da Silva gets the call for trainer Mark Casse. Queen's Plate third place finisher Tone Broke, who cost Skywire at the start when be broke inward, is the 5-1 fourth choice. Ricardo Santana Jr., who rode him to a 2nd place finish in the Sir Barton, rides Tuesday for trainer Steve Asmussen out of post 3. Finally, He's a Macho Man, the 4th place finisher in the Plate, is the 8-1 longest shot out of post 4. Patrick Husbands rides again for trainer Josie Carroll, who said, "I'm glad we brought him down. Patrick Husbands worked him (5f in 1:03.80 at Fort Erie on July 11) and said he was a little lost on the track because he likes to take a look at everything, so his time wasn't very fast but Patrick loved the way he got across the track."

Wonder Gadot winning the 2018 Prince of Wales Stakes

The Prince of Wales Stakes, the premier race at Fort Erie, is run at a distance of 1 3/16 miles with a purse of $400,000. Many excellent horses have won the race including Triple Crown winners Canebora, With Approval, Izvestia, Dance Smartly, Peteski, and Wando. Dance Smartly is also the dam of Scatter the Gold who won the Queen's Plate and Prince of Wales then just missed in the Breeders' Stakes in 2000. Her daughter Dancethruthedawn also won the Plate in 2001 but finished second in the Prince of Wales to Win City. In 2003, Wando won easily en route to his Triple Crown triumph. Last year's winner Wonder Gadot also won the Queen's Plate and went on to be named 2018 Horse of the Year in Canada, however she did not contest the Breeders' Stakes to attempt to complete the sweep.

Post time for the Prince of Wales Stakes is 7:40 p.m. ET on Tuesday July 23. The race will be shown live on TSN in Canada from 7-8pm, TVG in the United States, and at selected simulcast locations across the continent. Free past performances are available on BRISnet (look for Skywire).
