The $1 million Prevagen Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) originally drew 12 with 3 also-eligibles but Believing was scratched by the veterinarians after she flipped in the starting gate unseating jockey Ryan Moore. As a result 11 ran with Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint (G2) winner Cogburn sent off as the 4-5 favorite over 13-2 Bradsell, second in the Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp (G1), and 7-1 third choice Star of Mystery, second in the Franklin Stakes (G2) at Keeneland.

Starlust leads in the stretch

Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. sent Cogburn to the lead through fractions of 21.59 and 43.72 while pressed by 37-1 Isivunguvungu and stalked by Bradsell. Into the lane Cogburn opened up a 2 1/2 length lead but yielded late. 33-1 Starlust, last early under Rossa Ryan, rallied to get up by a neck over 12-1 Motorious in 55.92. It was a nose back to 9-1 Ag Bullet third, while favorite Cogburn was 5th beaten 1 1/4 lengths. There was a stewards' inquiry as Starlust came out and bumped 7th place finisher Isivunguvungu, but ruled that the incident did not warrant a disqualification.

Left: Starlust heads to the winner's circle. Winning trainer Ralph Beckett said, "He's a really tough horse, not had a break all year. He had a tough trip in the l'Abbaye last time but today he was very good. Rossa Ryan gets better by the month. It's his third or fourth year with us and today he was at his very best. The way he rode Bluestocking (GB) in the Arc was very different to today and I'm very proud of what he's achieved. What a day!"

Right: Starlust heads back to the barn. Winning jockey Rossa Ryan said, "An unbelievable day on a brilliant horse. We took our time and rode him for a bit of luck and thankfully it paid off. He's a very tough and consistent horse who deserved this win, so I'm delighted. It didn't work out last time out but today it has."

Left: Starlust in the post parade. Ryan added, "We were going so fast. The back of my head, I was like, Is he going forward or are we just going too fast? But by the top of the straight, I actually did thought we'd be in the first four. I was getting a good run through. I thought Cogburn at the top of the straight had slipped me. They couldn't hold up the frenetic gallop we had."

Right: Starlust circles awaiting the stewards' decision on the inquiry. Beckett added, "Sort of flashbacks, been here before. We had a filly, Secret Gesture, taken down in 2013 (Beverly D), somewhat unfairly we felt at the time. I was expecting the worst. Obviously the favorite came out. That was why Rossa went right, because it was a domino effect. Yes, obviously concerned because we operate under different rules. It's an interpretation of them, isn't it? Yeah, there was some concern.  Delighted to get it done. The inquiry certainly didn't take the edge off it, that's for sure."

Left: Second place finisher Motorious on the turf course. Trainer Phil D'Amato said, "He ran a great race. He was just stuck on the inside, but I thought the jock (Antonio Fresu) did a great job of getting him out and getting him into his run. We almost got the job done. Having to break from the rail, I thought he did a great job. You can make a legitimate argument that (Starlust) cost Cogburn a placing, but (the inquiry) is up to the stewards."

Right: Third place finisher Ag Bullet returns after the race. Jockey Umberto Rispoli said, "She likes to throw me out of the gate a few times. I think it was an absolutely great effort from her. She's coming back very quickly after a Grade 1 at Keeneland going a mile and to be honest with you, going five furlongs with the best sprinter in the world, I think it was a hell of a run for her. I know five furlongs is a little bit short for her, so that makes me move a little early and doesn't let me ride her the way I really wanted. But I had a good trip and I can't complain. I just got run down by two nice horses."

Fifth place finisher and beaten favorite Cogburn heads onto the turf course. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. said, “I used him a little early. I was in between two horses and he didn't break that well today. I had to use him a little bit early. I just let him be him. I didn't want to fight to much with him and I turned for home, I asked him to give me a good kick, but they went by me.”
