The $1 million Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) featured a field of 7 older horses going 1 mile on the main track. Defending champion Full Serrano was sent off as the 4-5 favorite off his Vosburgh (G1) win at Aqueduct. In to challenge him included 4-1 second choice Zozos, winner of the Ack Ack (G3), and 9-2 third choice Post Time, winner of the Preakness Stakes (G1) but fourth in the Awesome Again (G1) at Del Mar last out.

Down the stretch in the Dirt Mile

Jockey Flavien Prat sent Post Time to the lead first time by through fractions of 22.51, 46.02, and 1:09.78 while pressed by 11-1 Domestic Product and stalked by 42-1 longest shot Shirl's Bee. In the stretch Post Time continued to lead through 7f in 1:22.86. Full Serrano, 6th early under Junior Alvarado, came through between horses to collar Post Time inside the 1/8 pole. During the duel Full Serrano bore in as Post Time bore out at the 1/16 pole, causing the pair to bump before Full Serrano prevailed by a nose in 1:35.97. It was a long 3 3/4 lengths back to Domestic Product third. There was a lengthy stewards' inquiry into the bumping incident but the result stood.

Left: Full Serrano heads to the winner's circle. Winning trainer John Sadler said, "I was thrilled to get the post 3. From there on out, we got a really good ride from Joel (Rosario). He's my home boy. We've been together for a long time. This horse came to me and has done well since we've had him here."

Right: Full Serrano returns to the barn after the race. Winning owner Kosta Hronis said, We're always in the market for the long dirt races here for the California circuit. We're always shopping, I don't really get to do the shopping. I just follow John around. I have the basket, he puts the stuff in, I go to the register. That's my involvement (laughter)."

Left: Full Serrano heads out for the post parade. Sadler added, "Unfortunately, he got a little sick when we went back to Santa Anita, so he didn't get a run in the prep. He might have been in the Classic, had he not got a little temperature. I'd like to, if it works well, run in the Pegasus and then look possibly at the Middle East for this horse."

Right: Full Serrano in 6th first time by. Winning jockey Joel Rosario said, "I had a really good trip. We broke good, put myself in a good position and that was the key to winning the race on a speed track."

Left: Second place finisher Post Time returns after the race. Jockey Sheldon Russell said, "This track (is) known for speed and he has to be close. He broke how he always breaks. I left him alone and we got a great trip on the inside. I sort of just followed Flavien [Prat] the whole way down the backside. I just got a great split up the inside and it all opened up. Today I really thought it was going to be his day, and he ran all the way to the line. Maybe the short stretch was a bit of a disadvantage because I feel like he was coming."

Right: Third place finisher and beaten favorite Domestic Product in the post parade. Trainer Chad Brown said, "He got a great trip. He was third best today. Maybe at this level, Breeders' Cup, Grade 1 level, he might not want to run quite this far. This race developed perfectly for him; he just wasn't good enough. I was very proud of him. He got a nice third and he had a perfect, perfect trip. Sierra (Leone) really saved the day. We had a couple other horses that ran really well."

The start of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Flavien Prat aboard Domestic Product said, "Very good effort. I loved my trip. It looked like turning for home I was going to win. I think it's about as far as he wants to go."
