The $2 million FanDuel Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance features 2-year-old colts and geldings going 1 1/16 miles on the main track in a race that usually determines the early Kentucky Derby favorite for next year. East Avenue was sent off as the 9-5 favorite in the field of 10 off his win in the Breeders' Futurity (G1) at Keeneland. In to challenge him included 2-1 second choice Chancer McPatrick, winner of the Hopeful (G1) at Saratoga and Champagne (G1) at Aqueduct, and 11-2 third choice Jonathan's Way, winner of the Iroquois (G3) at Churchill Downs.

Citizen Bull leads in the stretch.

Jockey Martin Garcia sent 16-1 Citizen Bull to the lead first time by and he set fractions of 23.44, 47.89, and 1:12.21 while pressed by 6-1 fourth choice Gaming and stalked by 28-1 Getaway Car. Into the stretch Citizen Bull opened up a 1 1/2 length lead through 1 mile in 1:36.53, holding off Gaming the rest of the way to win by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:43.07. It was another 3 1/4 lengths back to late-running 61-1 Hill Road third, while favorite East Avenue stumbled badly at the start and failed to rally finishing ninth beaten 13 1/4 lengths.

Left: Citizen Bull heads to the winner's circle. Winning trainer Bob Baffert who trains the first two finishers said, "I told all my riders, your plan is to win the race. So they rode their horses the way they thought, Getaway Car, he has speed. We know Citizen Bull is very quick, very fast. But, they went fractions that they're supposed to run. In order to win these races, you need a good horse. And you have to have the right trip, the right luck."

Right: Citizen Bull heads back to the barn with his blanket. Co-owner Tom Ryan said, "It's interesting. We actually all came together as a group of owners commingling just in that time when Sol (Kumin) was part of that journey along with Starlight with Bob.  After Justify did what he did and we all worked out that we work well together, we decided to really attack it to put together a solid group of horses every year to give to Bob to try to come out with results like we did today."

Left: Citizen Bull heads out of the tunnel to the track. Winning jockey Martin Garcia said, "My horse was just running easy early and the other horse (Gaming) was just cruising in second. And, when it was time to go, the horse just took off."

Right: Citizen Bull leads first time by. Baffert added, "It means we don't have to discuss that (Derby suspension) situation again. That's what it means. Right now, (the Derby is) too far out, and you really don't know if you have a Derby horse until about February, January, February. Things happen. So I don't get too far ahead of myself. I just focus on what's in front of me this week or next week. It's good to be in the conversation. But it's still a long ways off."

Left: Second place finisher Gaming returns after the race. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. said, "Beautiful trip. I just took second lying beside the winner. I just let my horse find his stride and if I wanted to go after him. We kept coming. He looks really, really nice to me. Maybe down the road, one or two turns, he will show what he can do." Trainer Bob Baffert added, "I don't think he got away as good as he could have. I was surprised to see him laying second. And I figured they weren't going too fast because Gaming, he was wanting to go."

Right: Third place finisher Hill Road heads out of the tunnel to the track. Jockey Umberto Rispoli said, "The intention wasn't to be right up there because obviously you have a big shot, a 60-1. So the point was to get to one, two, three and get some good prize money. I had a good trip because on the backside I'm behind all of the favorites ahead of me. The three Bafferts went ahead and controlled the pace and it was very tough for us to make up ground. I'm very happy and pleased with the horse. I started to feel I had horse as I left the turn. Once I found a gap and I threw him in the hole, he just came and ran for me."

Left: Ninth place finisher and beaten favorite East Avenue exits the tunnel to the track. Trainer Brendan Walsh said, "It's just unfortunate. Tyler (Gaffalione) said he just went to break so fast it gave out from underneath of him. From there, no one was closing. The race was over. Another day."

Right:The horses break from the gate for the Juvenile. Tyler Gaffalione aboard beaten favorite East Avenue (post 1) added, "Obviously, the break definitely cost us. It's a huge disappointment. We're very high on this horse. We just felt like we weren't able to give him his best opportunity with the way it played out."
