Right: Citizen Bull leads first time by. Winning trainer Bob Baffert who trains the first two finishers said, "I told all my riders, your plan is to win the race. So they rode their horses the way they thought, Getaway Car, he has speed. We know Citizen Bull is very quick, very fast. But, they went fractions that they're supposed to run. In order to win these races, you need a good horse. And you have to have the right trip, the right luck."

Left: Henri Matisse in the post parade. Winning trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "There was a good few things that went wrong (at Longchamp) that we thought we could forget about and we always thought he was a very good horse. He's a Wootton Bassett and an unbelievable talent who can come from the back and quicken up and finish. Ryan gave him another beautiful ride. He's a beautiful horse; very well-bred horse."

Right: Henri Matisse heads back to the barn. Winning jockey Ryan Moore said, "He was very easy today and did it beautifully. I thought he was by far the best horse in the race and he's done it easily. He just traveled into it. I was wide on the bend but he just took me there very comfortably. At home we race a lot in straight lines so on the turn some horses appreciate that. Everyone does such an amazing job at home and back at the stud to get these horses here. I just had to keep him out of trouble and not mess it up. He's showed today what an incredible horse he could be."

Immersive wins the Juvenile Fillies

The $2 million NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) features the best 2-year-old fillies going 1 1/16 miles on the main track. Left: Immersive heads back to the barn. Winning trainer Brad Cox said, "Obviously, they were rolling pretty quick up front and Manny did a great job putting her in a great position. She broke well. Showed her stamina and ability to handle two turns. I think the further the better. She's a very good filly and showed it today, again. That was a huge performance."

Right: Immersive returns after the race. Winning jockey Manny Franco said, "I knew the pace was cooking in front, so I took my time and by the 3/8 pole, (Scottish Lassie) passed me and I hit the clear there by the 5/16, I follow her. I say, ‘Let's go, this is the time.' She was there for me and she responded pretty well. She's a grinder. She doesn't have a big turn of foot and she's a grinder, but at the same time, I feel like I'm going to get there."

Lake Victoria wins the NetJets Juvenile Fillies Turf

The $1 million John Deere Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) featured 14 two-year-old fillies going 1 mile on the turf. Thought Process continued to lead to midstretch through 7f in 1:22.15 before tiring. Lake Victoria, 7th early under Ryan Moore, rallied late to win by 1 1/2 lengths over May Day Ready in 1:34.28. Left: Lake Victoria heads out for the post parade. Winning trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "She got crowded and bumped a bit on the first bend, so Ryan was very cool on her and obviously ended up farther back than he wanted to be. It was her first time on a turning track and she was uneven on the straight and it was her first time over a mile. Just wanted to say our very best wishes to Clem Murphy (Bloodstock consultant for Coolmore), who is usually here. Without him, none of this would ever be happening."

Right: Lake Victoria heads back to the barn after the race. Winning jockey Ryan Moore said, "I know she broke in a little bit, but I think Frankie (Dettori aboard May Day Ready) was content to be where he was under the circumstances. When they hit the turn, I'm not sure exactly what happened in front of her. Horse or two bumped another and went out, and she went out and had to steady and make her way. She always shows up, there is no doubt about that. She always seems to find some trouble here and there. That's ok. That's racing."

Magnum Force wins the Juvenile Turf Sprint

Kicking off the World Championships, the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) featured a full field of 12 two-year-olds going 5 furlongs around one turn of the turf. Ecoro Sieg was sent off as the 5-2 favorite off his Canna Stakes win at Nakayama. In to challenge him included 4-1 second choice Whistlejacket, winner of the Prix Morny (G1) before finishing second in the Middle Park (G1), and 5-1 third choice Aesterius, off wins in the Prix d'Arenberg (G3) and Flying Childers (G2).

Jockey Paco Lopez sent 8-1 Governor Sam to the front through fractions of 21.77 and 44.69 while pressed by Aesterius and stalked by 93-1 longest shot Jet Sweep Joe. Governor Sam continued to lead to midstretch but 12-1 Magnum Force, 9th early under Colin Keane, came out for room and outfinished 27-1 Arizona Blaze to win by 1/2 a length in 56.36. It was another 1/2 length back to pacesetter Governor Sam third, while favorite Ecoro Sieg failed to rally finishing 8th beaten 5 1/4 lengths.

Left: Magnum Force heads back to the barn. Winning trainer Ger Lyons said, "I knew the horse was the right horse for the job, but if he was good enough, we didn't know until today. When you have Colin Keane riding for you, probably the most underrated jockey in the world just because he's a little bit like his trainer and likes to stay at home and walk his dogs and stay at the farm and not go around the world. Believe me, he's had two rides and two wins in the Breeders' Cup and it's about time the world opened up to him. It's fantastic."

Right: Magnum Force returns after the race. Lyons added, "It's huge credit to the horse, my team and Abdulla (Al Khalifa) my owner. There's plenty of us guys at home who could do this if we get the horses. And the secret to training winners is getting the horses — it's as simple as that. If a clown like me can train a winner of a Breeders' Cup, anybody can."

The $200,000 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes featured a full field of 14 two-year-olds going 1 mile on the turf. Jockey Paco Lopez sent 26-1 Kale's Angel to lead first time by through fractions of 23.48, 48.84 and 1:14.15 while pressed by 17-1 Floodlites and stalked by 13-2 Chasing Liberty. Into the stretch Chasing Liberty took over through 7f in 1:25.92, and held off late-running 12-1 Test Score to win by a neck in 1:37.44. It was another length back to 3-1 favoriyte Cavallo Bay third.

Winning trainer Rob Atras said, "(The plan was to) break sharp and kind of sit just off. Irad is Irad. It looked like he had a lot of horse when they were turning for home. He told me the stretch is a little short and he had horse. He made the move and it worked out. Originally we nominated for the Turf Sprint. We always toyed with the idea of stretching him out and when they made this race we thought this might be our best option."

The $175,000 Golden State Juvenile Fillies featured 9 California bred or sired 2-year-old fillies sprinting 7 furlongs on the main track. Jockey Joel Rosario sent 19-1 Rizzleberry Rose to the lead out of the chute through fractions of 22.56 and 45.72 while pressed by 27-1 We the Free and stalked by 28-1 longest shot Thirsty Mama. Into the stretch the pacesetters tired as 11-1 Tequilaandtherapy, 6th early under Edwin Maldonado, came through between horses to lead through 3.4 in 1:11.68. Tequilaandtherapy held off late-running 13-2 Grateful My Love by a nose to win in 1:24.91. It was another 3/4 length back to 2-1 favorite In the Air Tonight third.

Winning jockey Edwin Maldonado said, "She broke great. She was doing everything so nice and easy so I just sat on her. The track is a little heavy didn't want her to gas out early. The last time, she came off the pace, so I waited and I was able to split the leaders. I could feel that horse coming on the outside nearing the wire. I didn't know if I won or not." Leandro Mora, assistant to winning trainer Doug O'Neill added, "We thought (Pavel Is Appealing) was better than Tequilaandtherapy, but she kind of missed the break a little bit. So then we went from Plan A to Plan B. And I think it's starting to work out. I thought (Grateful My Love) got us at the wire. But once I saw the picture come up, I was the happiest man on earth."

Kicking off the weekend's stakes action was the $150,000 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes featuring a field of 7 older fillies and mares sprinting 5 furlongs on the turf. Jockey Edwin Maldonado sent 8-1 Sassy Nature to the lead down the backstretch through an opening quarter in 21.80 while pressed by 20-1 longest shot Shoshanah and stalked by 4-1 Kissed by Fire. Turning for home the pacesetters tired as 3-2 favorite Twirling Queen, 4th early, surged to the front through a half in 44.85. Kept to task by Luis Saez, Twirling Queen held off late-running 4-1 Just Nails to win by a neck in 56.42. It was another 2 lengths back to 9-2 Stay and Scam third.

Winning trainer Jose D'Angelo said, "I was pointing her to this race to put her back on the turf. Last time she ran on the dirt trying to get a graded stakes. She's a nice filly. She's not big but she has a big heart. I'm very sure that next year she's going to be in the best races of the country for fillies on the turf. I was waiting for the two fillies to go to the lead and she could sit and make her move. The trip was perfect and I'm very happy."

The $175,000 Golden State Juvenile featured a field of 8 California bred or sired 2-year-old males sprinting 7 furlongs. Jockey Adrian Escobedo sent 45-1 longest shot Silverado Storm to lead through fractions of 22.51 and 45.65 while pressed by 5-1 Shea Brennan and stalked by 9-2 Speedy Wilson. Into the lane jockey Armando Ayuso sent Speedy Wilson to lead through 3/4 in 1:10.89, and held off late-running 7-5 favorite R Heisman to win by 1/2 a length in 1:23.47. It was another 1 1/2 lengths back to Shea Brennan third.

Winning trainer Phil D'Amato said, "He only does as much as he needs to do. But those are the kind of horses you like because they stick around for a while. I knew we were in for a good stretch battle from the top of the lane home because (R Heisman) is a really nice horse. It's just good to see ‘Speedy' develop and he just looks like the longer the better for him. Once we get him around two turns, which we'll do next year, who knows."
