The $4 million Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) featured 11 older horses going 1 1/2 miles around 3 turns of the turf. Epsom Derby (G1) and Irish Derby (G1) winner Auguste Rodin was sent off as the 5-2 favorite off his win in the Irish Champion Stakes (G1). In to challenge him included 3-1 second choice Mostahdaf, winner of the Prince of Wales's (G1) at Royal Ascot and the Juddmonte International (G1) at York, and 7-2 third choice Up to the Mark, off wins in the Manhattan (G1) at Belmont Park and Coolmore Turf Mile (G1) at Keeneland.

Auguste Rodin leads down the stretch

Jockey Victor Espinoza sent 64-1 longest shot Balladeer to the lead first time by through fractions of 24.85, 48.79, 1:12.66, 1:37.00, and 2:01.28 while pressed by 54-1 Adhamo and stalked by 55-1 Broome and Up to the Mark. Turning for home Balladeer tired as Auguste Rodin, 8th early under Ryan Moore, came through on the rail to gain the lead. Up to the Mark closed late but Auguste Rodin held him off to win by 3/4 length in 2:24.30. It was another 1/2 length back to late-running 25-1 Shahryar third.

Left: Auguste Rodin in the winner's circle. Winning trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "He has a beautiful action, very intellectual, just a dream horse. What an incredible horse he is bringing Japanese and European pedigrees together. So delighted for the lads and Ryan gave him a brilliant ride. After 3 furlongs the race was havoc as everyone wanted to be in the rail then away from the rail. Ryan knew at the top of the bend where was he going to go as he had horses on his outside. He knew when he gets to the front he stops and hoped his momentum would get him home. An incredible ride."

Right: The trophy presentation for the Turf. Co-owner Michael Tabor said, "I think it's well-documented that he's blown out, for want of a better explanation, that we couldn't explain. Having said that, the three races -- I think it's three races he's won this year -- have been fantastic. To see him win the Derby and to see him win this race is something else. Obviously the ride Ryan gave him is very special. To be honest with you, I'd have to see it again and again to really focus on it because in my wildest dreams I thought he was too far back early, and he just seemed to hug the rail, and he was exceptional, I would say."

Left: Auguste Rodin in the paddock. Winning jockey Ryan Moore said, "The race didn't go to plan. The first part of the race was messy as everyone was in each other's way and I didn't really like where I was. All I wanted to do was get the horse to find his rhythm and he got there so quickly and easily and once he got to the front that's all he does. Considering how the race went against him it was probably his best performance. Going into the race it looked a deep field and now he's won two Derbies, Irish Champion Stakes and now come here and beaten some proper horses. He's vindicated himself now."

Right: Auguste Rodin heads back to the barn. Co-owner M.V. Magnier said, "There's a couple of things we can do with this. It's like Aidan said after he won the Derby it's the meeting of constants with Deep Impact and Galileo and everything. He's a remarkable racehorse. He's very well bred. We could stand him in Ashford. We could stand him in Europe. Or we could keep him in training next year. I have this lovely romantic idea that maybe bringing him back for the Classic next year. There's lots of options. Like Aidan said on Thursday, he's floating over the dirt. So there's a lot of options open. We'll have to decide in the next week or so."

Left: Second place finisher Up to the Mark returns after the race. Trainer Todd Pletcher said,  "I thought he ran fantastic; kept trying to the wire and gaining on the winner in the closing yards. We had a lot of people questioning whether we picked the right race and we picked what we thought was the right race for our horse despite the fact that you could argue that it was a tougher race than the Mile. I think he showed that he belongs with all the tough turf horses in the world. It came down to one guy getting through on the inside at the critical moment. That's turf racing."

Right: Third place finisher Shahryar exits the paddock. Jockey Cristian Demuro said,  "He ran very good. The horse has come back like he was in Dubai when I won the Sheema Classic. He tried hard and he finished very close. I wish to him all the best next in Hong Kong. If he can keep this form he can be competitive again."

First time down the stretch in the Turf with Balladeer leading. Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard Up to the Mark said, "I liked the way he ran and I was happy where I was during the race. I thought I might win from the top of the stretch, but the winner got through along the rail. I saw him, but there was nothing I could do about it. That was the difference in the race."
