Kicking off the World Championships, the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) featured a full field of 12 two-year-olds going 5 furlongs around one turn of the turf. No Nay Mets was sent off as the 5-2 favorite off his win i the Exacta Systems Rosie's Stakes at Colonial Downs. In to challenge him included 3-1 second choice Big Evs, winner of the Flying Childers Stakes (G2) at Doncaster, and 6-1 third choice Crimson Advocate, unraced since winning the Queen Mary Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot in June.

Jockey John Velazquez sent Crimson Advocate to the lead through quick fractions of 20.71 and 43.65 while pressed by Big Evs and stalked by 27-1 Tiger Belle. In the stretch Crimson Advocate tired allowing Big Evs to inherit the lead. Confidently ridden by Tom Marquand, Big Evs held off late-running 23-1 Valiant Force to win by 1/2 a length in 55.31. It was another 3/4 length back to 24-1 Starlust third, and a neck more to favorite No Nay Mets fourth.

Left: Big Evs in the winner's circle. Winning jockey Tom Marquand said, “Just amazing. Once he got out the gates and we got in an early position I knew we wouldn't be far away. Turning for home nothing was going to catch him. He put his head down and galloped all the way to the line. To ride a Breeders' Cup winner is a dream come true. He's just an exceptional horse."
Right: The trophy presentation for the Juvenile Turf Sprint. Winning trainer Michael Appleby said, “I can't believe it. He's been an absolute superstar all year and to come here and put in a performance like that is unreal. Going into the race I thought he had an outstanding chance, and when Tom rode him in a breeze earlier in the week he couldn't have been more bullish. We'll enjoy it as it's a dream to be here never mind go and win. Hopefully he comes out the race in good order then we'll make a plan for next season. He really is a horse of a lifetime for us. I can't thank the team at home enough for all their hard work."

Left: Big Evs in the post parade. Marquand added, "English gate speed is different than American gate speed, and we were hoping it would be fast enough out here to get a good pitch. I think he is tough as well. He had the speed today, but he did break half a length slower than a couple of them, but he hits up gear and he trucks along. I tell you, he was learning around the bends. It wasn't the smoothest, but yeah, he got the hang of it halfway around. And it was home to the straight. To the perfectly honest, for as much confidence as you have that you are going to win, it was there. He just felt like there were two gears left to carry us all the way. Super performance."
Right: Big Evs heads back to the barn after the race. Appleby added, "I mean, a little bit of concern the way around the bend. We never have been around the bend before, so we galloped him a few times, and he did quite well with the lead length. There weren't any real concerns. The race all went to plan. Jumped well. Got a lead. Coming off the bend, he kicked again." Owner Paul Teasdale explained that the horse is named after his friend Paul "Big Evs" Evans who died of lung cancer a year ago. "We've done horses together, and we've gone racing a lot of times together. We really wanted it to be a great horse in memory of Paul to keep his name alive and for him and his family. He's certainly done that."

Left: Second place finisher Valiant Force returns after the race. Trainer Adrian Murray said, "We had always wanted to bring him here, but we had a hard time fitting a race in between because the weather had been so bad in Ireland. It was soft ground last time and he's a fast-ground horse. It's no surprise for him to prove he was this class. He had a run before ascot and things didn't go his way, so I suppose people turned off on him, but we have always thought a lot about this horse."
Right: Third place finisher Starlust returns after the race. Trainer Ralph Beckett said, “He ran a huge race. I thought everything went to plan. He was never going to be able to break fast enough, that's just not him to sit up with the early pace. We got the breaks in the straight and weren't good enough to finish second, but we were third, so it was all good."

Fourth place finisher and beaten favorite No Nay Mets returns after the race. Trainer George Weaver said, "We wanted to be forward. All three of his wins, he was on the lead or close to it. It's all fine if you want the lead, but you have to be fast enough to get there. They were smoking up there." Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. added, "He ran great. I thought I was the speed of the race but he didn't mind sitting there. He listened to me and relaxed. When I asked him, he cut the corner, was in the clear and made a good run. Unfortunately we couldn't get there."
