Monday morning was partly cloudy for the morning works at Santa Anita, with temperatures in the mid 50's. We got to the track just after 7am today after picking up our photo credentials at the press hotel. There were three timed works from Breeders' Cup horses this morning. European horses that arrived Saturday will clear quarantine Monday night and be on the track Tuesday morning. The post position draw will be held this afternoon, so check out all the entries, post positions, and morning line odds here later.
Here are photos for 43 of the horses on the track Monday morning. Click the small picture to see a larger version. At time of writing we are awaiting further comments from connections for the rest of the races, and will be added when available.
Arabian Knight (Classic) worked 5f in a bullet 59 seconds. Trainer Bob Baffert said, "He's healthy, he's working well. There have been no hiccups. He's ready. I know this is going to be a tough race, but if he brings his ‘A' game, I don't really care who's running against us. That's my focus with him. (Winning the Pacific Classic) was a good race. I thought he might get beat from the quarter-pole home, but he really dug it. Now he's finally getting into form where we're going to see the best of him."

Derma Sotogake (Classic) warmed up with footwork and walking through the parade ring before even more walking and warming up throughout the grounds. Eventually took a couple easy laps, one jogging and one cantering around the Santa Anita main track. All in all, it was approximately one hour of training. "He ran in the UAE Derby from the front and that went well, but missing the jump was everything in the Kentucky Derby," trainer Hidetaka Otonashi said. "I am not concerned at all about (stamina). Mind Your Biscuits' progeny have been winning over 1800 meters and 2000 meters in Japan. Unfortunately, after training well, he had a little setback with a hoof issue and he missed the prep race," Otonashi said. "He recovered very well, and he is moving very well now. He was finishing well in Kentucky, and he ran a good race. As far as this race, he does not need to be on the front and following the leader would be the best for him — but I don't mind if he leads the race like in Dubai."

Senor Buscador (Classic) galloped 1 1/2 miles under exercise rider Dennis Means. Trainer Todd Fincher said, "If I could choose, it would be an outside post."

Zandon (Classic) arrived Sunday afternoon from Belmont Park and jogged 1 mile Monday at Santa Anita. Trainer Chad Brown said, "He's coming into the race in the right way and I love the way he finished his last race off. Obviously, if the pace scenario works out for him, I could see him getting the 1 1/4. It was very important for him last time, I felt, to break through and finish up his race the right way and win one. He did it well. Frankie Dettori will ride him and put him wherever he is comfortable. I don't want him to be too far away, but wherever he is comfortable is what's most important. Frankie has not ridden him before, but he's not only one of the best riders I've ever seen, but also an incredible judge of pace. He will figure out where he's happiest travelling, while also getting him out in the clear where he can make his late run. We have always thought highly of him and he's run against the very best, so his form lines are very strong," he concluded. "It's very important and would be very rewarding to win with this horse."

Search Results (Distaff) worked at Belmont on Saturday, flew over on Sunday, and jogged Monday. Trainer Chad Brown said, "It figures to set up for her a bit, as she prefers a target. She did win wire-to-wire last time, showing her versatility, but her best trip is with a target. With lots of pace signed on here, she could prove tough to beat. If I have to say one thing about her, it's that I'm very, very confident that she's going to run the race of her life, but with one caveat: she doesn't always take her racetrack with her," he continued. "I'm not certain about Santa Anita. If she likes it and takes to it, she's going to be right there. If she doesn't, she won't. She's run well on several tracks, but doesn't always take her track with her. For example, Keeneland she didn't like, so her form elsewhere is pretty good."

Speed Boat Beach (Sprint) worked 4f in 47.80 seconds. I really liked his comeback race," trainer Baffert said. "Since that effort, he's trained really well (including a 4f final prep in :47 4/5 this morning). I've got the screws tightened on him now."

Mawj (Mile) had a canter around the Santa Anita main track. She then gate schooled, walking in the gates before backing out in controlled fashion. Interestingly the Godolphin team swapped riders to do the gate schooling with regular work rider Michael Greig hopping off for Matthew Lawson who stood her in the gates. "Mawj exercised very well this morning," Greig said. "I'm really happy with her. She knows what she needs to do so I just leave it up to her."

Noted (Juvenile) galloped 1 1/4 miles under exercise rider Dominic Merrit. Trainer Todd Pletcher said, "He's run well on the turf three times, and he's undefeated on the dirt in one start (Sapling at Monmouth) and he defeated a horse (Dornoch) that came back to break his maiden impressively at Keeneland, on the dirt. I thought his breeze on (Oct. 19) on the dirt was quite good."

Jody's Pride (Juvenile Fillies)
|
Just F Y I (Juvenile Fillies) worked 4f in 48.60 seconds with assistant trainer Neil Pozansky aboard. Trainer Bill Mott said, "She went well. She had galloped really strong for two days in a row and I didn't want to work her off that. Neil was really happy with her and she looked great to me. Neil said she felt good and was responsive to whatever he wanted when she started the work."
|
Life Talk (Juvenile Fillies) galloped 1 1/4 miles for exercise rider Humberto Zamora. "She was third in the Frizette Stakes (G1) in difficult conditions, a sloppy track. Might have been on the dead part of the race track down on the rail. I think it was a strong-enough effort on its own to merit giving her the try. I also think she had a valid excuse under the conditions that she can move forward and I do think she'll appreciate the extra sixteenth and getting around two turns." said trainer Todd Pletcher.

Life's an Audible (Juvenile Fillies Turf) galloped 1 1/4 miles under exercise rider Humberto Zamora. Trainer Todd Pletcher said, "She won going 5 1/2 (furlongs). Closed well. Stretched out nicely in the Miss Grillo (G2) and again was closing well late. Just kind of ran out of time. I thought she finished up strongly and could hopefully make another move forward off that."

Live In the Dream (Turf Sprint) had a strong canter on the turf over 5 furlongs. As he has done each morning, he traveled with great enthusiasm in the hands of regular work rider Shoshana Cooksley. His owners Steve and Jolene De'Lemos were trackside to watch their sprinter exercise.
