The $1 million Prevagen Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) drew a field of 11 two-year-olds going 1 mile on the turf. Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (G1) runner-up Unquestionable was sent off as the 3-2 favorite over 5-1 second choice Endlessly, winner of the Del Mar Juvenile Turf (G3) and Zuma Beach (G3), and 11-2 third choice My Boy Prince, winner of the Cup and Saucer after finishing second in the Summer Stakes (G1).
Unquestionable rallies on the outside in the stretch. |
Jockey Luis Saez sent 21-1 Air Recruit to the lead first time by through fractions of 22.26, 46.72, and 1:10.25 while pressed by My Boy Prince and stalked by Unquestionable. Into the stretch, Air Recruit tired allowing My Boy Prince to inherit the lead through 7f in 1:22.07, but Unquestionable, confidently ridden by Ryan Moore. came out 3 wide and rallied by to win by 1 1/2 lengths over late-running 22-1 Mountain Bear in 1:33.65. It was a head back to My Boy Prince third. After the finish Mountain Bear was quickly pulled up and dismounted by jockey Dylan McMonagle, and was vanned off. It is worth noting that Frankie Dettori was originally scheduled to ride Unquestionable but when stablemate River Tiber was scratched by the veterinarians, trainer Aidan O'Brien reassigned Moore to Unquestionable.

Left: Unquestionable in the winner's circle. Winning jockey Ryan Moore said, "He always showed quite a lot early on. He had a very good run in the Lagardere. He has been progressing. The slight step-up in trips suited him today. It's a horse with pace, and he was able to get a nice position and travel comfortably, and he always felt in control of the race. He's probably more of a horse that I think has more progression in him. He doesn't ride like a sharp 2-year-old. He rides like a horse that's going to be better as he grows into his frame."
Right: The trophy presentation for the Juvenile Turf. Winning trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "Ryan said to me after that he thought he was our French Derby horse for next year. So he's a very exciting horse. He's not big. He's well-balanced. Ryan had him in a lovely spot today. Took his time on him, said he was going to produce him late. I didn't know he was going to produce him that late. But delighted, really."
Left: Unquestionable in the post parade. Moore added, "I was never really sure what was going to happen, but when the opportunity came to catch some cover and go the shortest way, I was delighted where I was. Always happy that I had the horse tip out when I needed to, and he got to the front probably a little earlier than what was ideal, but he was always in control. He never fell under any threat, really."
Right: Unquestionable heads back to the barn after the race. O'Brien added, "You need a horse that handles fast ground here. They need to have speed, and they need to get a mile. So you need a very good horse to win any of these races. We always hope that we have horses in good enough shape to be able to come and compete because this time of year it's the best race, and you get fast ground, but you just need very good horses."
Left: Second place finisher Mountain Bear heads out for the post parade. He was pulled up and vanned off after the race. After X-rays were taken, he was determined to have sustained a non-displaced lateral condylar fracture to his left front leg. A full recovery is expected. Trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "Usually with a condylar, he will have a month's rest, and that will heal very quick. It's an undisplaced. If you look at the thing, it's only a little hairline down the front of his cannon. So he can get a cast on him for four weeks and should be fine. He did no damage. I would imagine he won't travel until they're 100% perfect."
Right: Third place finisher My Boy Prince returns after the race. Trainer Mark Casse (who trains My Boy Prince and 4th place finisher Can Group) said, "I think we just got beat for second. I am proud of both of my horses, they ran well. I was a little surprised to see (Air Recruit) up on the lead. I thought (My Boy Prince) would be on the lead. Joel (Rosario) said he was running great; we just got run down. My other horse ran good, too. Flavien (Prat) said, 'please let me ride him back.' He just needs more ground. Look, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. The only thing you can ask for is for them to show up and have the opportunity to get a good trip. How can I be disappointed in either horse? It's not easy to beat those guys from (Europe)."
The horses break from the gate for the Juvenile Turf. Joel Rosario aboard My Boy Prince said, "It looked like I was going to (be able) to make the lead early, but they sent the 1 (Air Recruit) out early. I just had to sit in second. He did everything right. He still ran good. Turning for home, I thought was going to make a run, but the closing horses were fresher but it was a good race for my horse."
