The $2 million Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) featured a field of 12 older fillies and mares going 1 1/4 miles on the turf. Inspiral was sent off as the 5-2 favorite off her wins in the Prix Jacques Le Marois (G1) at Deauville and Sun Chariot (G1) at Newmarket. In to challenge her included 3-1 second choice In Italian, second in the Diana (G1) at Saratoga and First Lady (G1) at Keeneland, and 4-1 third choice Warm Heart, winner of the Yorkshire Oaks (G1) at York and Prix Vermeille (G1) at Longchamp.

Inspiral rallies in the center down the stretch.

Jockey Joel Rosario sent In Italian to the front first time by through fractions of 22.95, 46.90, 1:12.45, and 1:36.38 while pressed by 56-1 State Occasion and stalked by 18-1 Fev Rover. In the stretch In Italian continued to lead to the 1/8 pole before tiring. Inspiral, 8th early under Frankie Dettori, came out 3 wide and surged late to win by a neck over Warm Heart in 1:59.06. It was a length back to late-running 13-1 Moira third.

Left: Inspiral in the winner's circle. Winning trainer John Gosden said, "An amazing performance from an outstanding filly. Frankie said he was happy with her throughout the race having a good pitch on the inside rail. She traveled beautifully throughout and showed an electric turn of foot. Turning into the straight Frankie had to sit and suffer for a few strides but once she got out she flew home and won very well in the end."

Right: The trophy presentation for the Filly and Mare Turf. Winning jockey Frankie Dettori said, "My main concern, she's always slow out of the gates. Usually the Filly and Mare Turf cuts out to eight runners, but this year 12. I thought I'll have to really pass most of the horses. She jumped good. I got squeezed out. I got on the fence. I was pleased. I really wanted to be where William (Buick aboard With the Moonlight) was, but he got there before me. She needs a quarter of a mile to get really in top gear. I thought I'd better not try to go for gaps. I found the opening on the outside. I expected her, again, to find top gear, but once she found top gear -- I don't know if you see her pass the line, she was flying."

Left: Inspiral in the paddock. Gosden added, "We were confident she'd get the trip, but she is notoriously slow out of the gate. As you saw today, she was last early on. But Frankie did the one thing he could do, he got down towards the inside, followed William Buick, saved every inch. And then he said, as he probably said to you, I've only got one option. I've got to get out as soon as I can. If I wait for the inside -- it didn't open up at the turn, and he did the wise thing and got out. The way she came and finished and the way she galloped out, she's probably saying that the trainer has been running her over the wrong distance the last year. I knew she'd get the 1 1/4 mile well. She sorted out well."

Right: Inspiral heads back to the barn.

Second place finisher Warm Heart in the walking ring. Trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "It was a great run. We are delighted with her. She was beaten by a champion. She didn't see Inspiral, who came at her really quick, but she ran a great race and we couldn't be happier. Ryan (Moore) gave her a super ride. When she hit the front it looked as though she would go and win but Inspiral is an exceptional horse and Frankie was at his best. Warm Heart is a very sound and tough horse and I think she'll carry on improving. I don't think she's done yet for the year and if she comes out of the race well, Hong Kong will be the plan for either the Hong Kong Cup or the Hong Kong Vase."

Right: Third place finisher Moira returns after the race. Trainer Kevin Attard said,  "She is a wonderful filly. We hooked some soft turf at home (Woodbine) and she doesn't favor that. Coming out to California, we were looking for some firm ground and she got that today. She proved she is one of the best. I thought (Flavien Prat) gave her a good ride. Crossing the dirt, it looked like it got a little tight and maybe she got bounced around a little bit but, after that, he put her in a great spot. He had dead aim and she was traveling really comfortably and he tipped her out like she likes to do and she came with a big run."

Frankie Dettori performs his flying dismount off Inspiral. Dettori added, "She was champion 2-year-old. Champion 3-year-old filly. The few times she got beat, you can say the ground was too soft or she missed the jump or she wasn't quite ready. But when she's on song, she took it on to the colts and beat them twice. She's one of the better ones for sure. She won't win a beauty contest, but by God, she can run."
