The 2024 Breeders' Cup World Championships ended on Saturday with nine races, all with year-end championship implications, four of which were conducted over Del Mar's 7 furlong Jimmy Durante turf course in the infield. Conditions were similar to Friday, with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 60's for the 36,436 fans in attendance, with the course rated firm.

Flavien Prat won the 22nd Bill Shoemaker Award and his first, off 2 wins, the Classic with Sierra Leone and the Filly and Mare Turf with Moira. The Shoemaker Award goes to the jockey who rides the most winners in the 14 Championship races with the tiebreaker being a 10-3-1 point system for second- through fourth-place finishes. Ryan Moore also had 2 wins, Henri Matisse in the Juvenile Turf and Lake Victoria in the Juvenile Filles Turf, but Prat also had a second place finish with Raging Sea in the Distaff, breaking the tie.

Full results with several photos will available for each race sometime Sunday.

Right: Rebel's Romance heads back to the barn. Winning trainer Charlie Appleby said, "I don't need to tell William how to ride this horse. He knows him inside-out. Throughout the race, I was pleased with where he was in his pitch and pleased to see to see him make the move that he did. He just keeps going and we had the momentum our way. Most importantly, full credit to all the team, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and Team Godolphin. A horse like this, he's a superstar, he really is. You watch him run around there and you really feel it. You want him to win."

Left: More Than Looks in the post parade. Winning jockey Jose Ortiz said, “I knew I had enough speed leaving the gate, so as soon as I broke, I saw [William] Buick inside of me, so right away, that's the horse [Notable Speech] I wanted to follow. I either wanted to follow him or Chili Flag or somebody that closes. But I wanted to follow William and it worked out perfect.”

Right: More Than Looks heads back to the barn. Winning trainer Cherie DeVaux celebrating her first Breeders' Cup win said, "Everything went as well as we could have hoped for. The horse is a little difficult to ride. He doesn't get early position, but Jose (Ortiz) did a great job of getting him settled and getting him out. I don't know how to say it in words. It's unbelievable. We have had a lot of faith in him from the beginning, but things have not gone exactly to plan. The ownership group has been extremely patient. All the credit goes to More Than Looks.”

Moira wins the Filly and Mare Turf

Left: Moira in the post parade. Winning jockey Flavien Prat said, “She broke well and I was able to get myself close to the rail going into the first turn. It felt like the pace was slow, and on the backside, I didn't want anyone to get the move on me. I decided to get out and get myself closer and try to get the jump on everybody and it worked out."

Right: Moira heads back to the barn. Winning trainer Kevin Attard said, “Just fantastic. She's such a good horse. It's so rewarding to finally see her get that Grade 1. Had a great trip. She trained really well going into this race and it just unfolded in the right direction for us. She has (had a fine career). A little but underrated. Doesn't get the respect sometimes I think she deserves. It was nice to see her put it all together today and show everybody that she is a true champion.”

Starlust wins the Turf Sprint

The $1 million Prevagen Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) originally drew 12 with 3 also-eligibles but Believing was scratched by the veterinarians after she flipped in the starting gate unseating jockey Ryan Moore. As a result 11 ran with Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint (G2) winner Cogburn sent off as the 4-5 favorite over 13-2 Bradsell, second in the Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp (G1), and 7-1 third choice Star of Mystery, second in the Franklin Stakes (G2).

Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. sent Cogburn to the lead through fractions of 21.59 and 43.72 while pressed by 37-1 Isivunguvungu and stalked by Bradsell. Into the lane Cogburn opened up a 2 1/2 length lead but yielded late. 33-1 Starlust, last early under Rossa Ryan, rallied to get up by a neck over 12-1 Motorious in 55.92. It was a nose back to 9-1 Ag Bullet third, while favorite Cogburn was 5th beaten 1 1/4 lengths. There was a stewards' inquiry as Starlust came out and bumped 7th place finisher Isivunguvungu, but ruled that the incident did not warrant a disqualification.

Left: Starlust in the post parade. Winning jockey Rossa Ryan said, “An unbelievable day on a brilliant horse. We took our time and rode him for a bit of luck and thankfully it paid off. He's a very tough and consistent horse who deserved this win, so I'm delighted. It didn't work out last time out but today it has.”

Right: Starlust heads back to the barn. Winning trainer Ralph Beckett said, “He's a really tough horse, not had a break all year. He had a tough trip in the l'Abbaye last time but today he was very good. Rossa Ryan gets better by the month. It's his third or fourth year with us and today he was at his very best. The way he rode Bluestocking (GB) in the Arc was very different to today and I'm very proud of what he's achieved. What a day!”

The first stakes race at Del Mar on Breeders' Cup Saturday was the $200,000 Bayakoa Stakes (G3) for older fillies and mare going 1 mile on the main track. Jockey Juan Hernandez sent 3-10 favorite Hope Road to the lead first time by through fractions of 22.38, 46.11, and 1:10.73 while pressed by 10-1 Saddle Up Jessie and stalled by 5-1 second choice Alpha Bella. Into the lane Hope Road opened up a 1 1/2 length lead through 7f in 1:23.42, and held off Alpha Bella late to win by 1/2 a length in 1:36.51. It was another 1/2 length back to 8-1 third choice Desert Dawn third.

Winning trainer Bob Baffert said, "We expected her to do what she did. She's getting better and better. We're developing her in a slow, nice way. It's good to have these kind of horses. We were very fortunate to train her mother (Marley's Freedom) and she can run farther than her mother. She's speed; she's really fast."

The $300,000 Goldikova Stakes (G3) presented by Yaamava' featured a field of 10 older fillies and mares going 1 mile on the turf. Jockey Frankie Dettori sent 5-1 third choice Raqiya to the lead first time by through fractions of 23.04, 48.38, and 1:13.41 while pressed by 8-1 Kathmandu and stalked by 38-1 Omaha Girl. In the stretch Raqiya opened up a 1 1/2 length lead through 7f in 1:24.93 and held off late-running 30-1 Uncorked the rest of the way to win by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:36.09. It was another 1/2 length back to 2-1 favorite Sacred Wish third.

Winning trainer Owen Burrows said, “I just said to Frankie (Dettori) if she jumps well, go for it. I just basically left it to Frankie. I was very comfortable in that she would stay so I wasn't too bothered by the stepping up to a mile. Obviously, we were very concerned with the draw but look, he gave her a great ride on the front didn't he? He dictated from the front, quicken up on the bend and it worked out well.”
