The $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) drew a field of 12 two-year-olds going 1 mile on the turf. National Stakes (G1) runner-up Henri Matisse was sent off as the 7-2 favorite off his fifth place finish in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (G1) at Longchamp. In to challenge him included 4-1 second choice Zulu Kingdom, winner of the With Anticipation (G3) at Saratoga and Pilgrim (G2) at Aqueduct, and 9-2 third choice New Century, winner of the Summer Stakes (G1) at Woodbine.

Henri Matisse rallies on the outside in the stretch.

Jockey Jose Ortiz sent 15-1 Dream On to the lead first time by through fractions of 22.65, 46.31, and 1:10.50 while pressed by 11-1 Mentee and stalked by Zulu Kingdom. Dream On led to midstretch through 7f in 1:22.45 before tiring, as Henri Matisse, 11th early under Ryan Moore, came out 4 wide and rallied to outfinish 29-1 Iron Man Cal by a neck in 1:34.48. It was another 1/2 length back to 19-2 Aomori City third.

Left: Henri Matisse heads to the winner's circle. Winning jockey Ryan Moore said, "He was very easy today and did it beautifully. I thought he was by far the best horse in the race and he's done it easily. He just traveled into it. I was wide on the bend but he just took me there very comfortably. At home we race a lot in straight lines so on the turn some horses appreciate that. Everyone does such an amazing job at home and back at the stud to get these horses here. I just had to keep him out of trouble and not mess it up. He's showed today what an incredible horse he could be."

Right: Henri Matisse with his winner's blanket. Winning trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "There was a good few things that went wrong (at Longchamp) that we thought we could forget about and we always thought he was a very good horse. He's a Wootton Bassett and an unbelievable talent who can come from the back and quicken up and finish. Ryan gave him another beautiful ride. He's a beautiful horse; very well-bred horse."

Left: Henri Matisse heads out for the post parade. Moore added, "Aidan says it's all teamwork, but I remember watching Johannesburg win in Belmont as a kid. And Aidan's been doing this for -- how long ago was that? -- 23 years ago now. Yeah, what he's done is incredible."

Right: Henri Matisse returns after the race. O'Brien added, "It's incredible (to get to 20 Breeders' Cup wins and equal D. Wayne Lukas), obviously, and we all know what an unbelievably special man Wayne is. I'm honored to equal his record. He's the most special man and always been such a help to us. He rang me during the week and he spoke to me about this track and the way to ride; what to do and what not to do. He was explaining about the Classic and the way he thought we should ride it, so we feel very grateful and privileged that he was so good to tell us everything; honored really."

Left: Second place finisher Iron Man Cal (6) returns after the race with third place finisher Aomori City (12). Owner Billy Koch of Iron Man Cal said, "You know, we had high hopes coming in. He can't read the tote board. This horse has done everything we have asked of him. He is just a real cool horse. We are so excited. He looked like a winner until Henri Matisse. This is Cal's (Ripken Jr., horse's namesake) signature on the hat I have here. He made it for us, We are friends with Cal and we always hang with him at the Preakness. We decided to do something fun, and he delivered."

Right: Third place finisher Aomori City breaks through the starting gate. He was easily stopped by jockey William Buick and the outrider and was allowed to reload and start. Buick said, "He ran super. It probably didn't help that he hit the gate and broke through. He didn't travel as well as I expected, but maybe that's because he broke through the gate. It was a good run from a wide gate and we knew he was sitting on a good run. Maybe with a good draw and different gate situation, he could have won the race."

The horses break from the gate for the Juvenile Turf.
