The $1 million John Deere Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) featured 12 two-year-old fillies going 1 mile on the turf. After morning line favorite Precise scratched, Ultimate Love was sent off as the 7-2 favorite off her win in the Selima Stakes at Laurel. In to challenge her included 4-1 second choice Time to Dream, third in the Jessamine (G2) after winning the P.G. Johnson, and 6-1 third choice Imaginationthelady, undefeated winner of the Jessamine.

Balantina leads down the stretch

Jockey Ryusei Sakai sent 17-2 Switch in love to the lead first time by through fractions of 22.33, 45.96, and 1:11.01 while pressed by 64-1 longest shot Celebrity Warrior and stalked by 17-1 Brave Deb. Turning for home the pacesetters tired as 24-1 Ground Support took over through 7f in 1:23.18. 20-1 Balantina, 8th early under Oisin Murphy, found room inside and rallied to win by 1 1/4 lengths over late-running 14-1 Pacific Mission in 1:35.07. It was a head back to Ground Support third, while favorite Ultimate Love checked in 5th beaten 3 lengths.

Left: Balantina heads to the winner's circle. Winning trainer Donnacha O'Brien, celebrating his first Breeders' Cup win said, "It feels incredible. We've been coming here a long time, since we were babies, really. To watch Dad (Aidan) do it year in and year out, and (brother) Joseph to get winners. Nice to be on the board. Her form was very strong in the early part of the year. When we run her at the Curragh, probably shouldn't; they got a shower rain literally half an hour before the race and the ground went soft. We probably shouldn't have run her. She's a really low mover. Then after she disappointed there, we just gave her a bit of time. And Steve wanted to come here. So a fair bit to him. He made the shout to come to the Breeders' Cup. So we just worked back from here, and she'd been training exceptionally the last few weeks."

Right: Balantina in the post parade. Winning jockey Oisin Murphy said, "Irad (Ortiz Jr.) broke inside me but he didn't have a great start and I was able to get up inside him and save ground on the first turn. Got in the back of the favorite (Ultimate Love) and when he switched out turning in I was able to go up the inside, but I had the horse though. She's a great athlete and that's why she was able to handle the track so well."

Left: Second place finisher Pacific Mission in the post parade. Jockey Colin Keane said, "I had brilliant run around. Obviously from a bad draw so we took our time. We ended up following the winner the whole way. We turned in and I think the pace collapsed. Oisin had to sit for a second and so did we. Got out and we came home wide. Good draw she might have won."

Right: Third place finisher Ground Support in the post parade. Jockey Adam Beschizza said, "I guess they'll take her more seriously now. She does have 6-furlong speed, but she stays well. She's been rating pretty nice at home. It wasn't our plan to be on the lead at Aqueduct, but we were there organically. She stays so well, and I saw that seam and thought if I could steal a few lengths - once she ranges up there, she's very hard to pass. There's a few gears there and she just clicks through them. Huge [effort]."
