The $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) featured a field of 8 older horses going 1 mile on the main track after Mystik Dan and White Abarrio scratched. Nysos was sent off as the 7-10 favorite off wins in the Triple Bend (G3) and San Diego Handicap (G2). In to challenge him included 4-1 second choice and defending champion Full Serrano off a second place finish in the Goodwood (G1), and 11-2 third choice Citizen Bull, winner of the Shared Belief Stakes.

Turning for home Citizen Bull continued to lead through 7f in 1:21.67, but favorite Nysos, 5th early under Flavien Prat, came out for room and rallied to win by a head in 1:35.71. Left: Nysos heads to the winner's circle. Winning jockey Flavien Prat said, "I was pleased with my trip and was traveling well. The pace was strong but I was able to make up a lot ground. When I got in the clear, I thought I had the measure of Citizen Bull, but he gave me a good run and Citizen Bull ran well. At the wire, I thought I was ahead of him but it got me worried."

Right: Nysos exits the tunnel from the paddock to the post parade. Winning trainer Bob Baffert (who trains the first two finishers) said, "It should have been a dead heat! I knew I was going to win. Citizen Bull caught another gear and Nysos – he hadn't run in a while – he dug in and it was just unbelievable. We work so hard and there are so many ups and downs and you just want to be able to cheer for them coming down the stretch. That Citizen Bull, he looked like a champion that he was last year. Nysos is a great horse. It was actually his first Grade 1 win; a lot of people thought he was a superstar. They were on their bellies and they ran … what a race. It's a shame that one of them had to lose."

Left: Second place finisher Citizen Bull exits the tunnel for the post parade. Jockey Juan Hernandez said, "This one he loves to run. He loves to run on the lead. I knew the fractions were really fast, but he tried his best, and he was trying to come back when he saw the outside horse. He did everything that I asked for and, he just left everything on the track. He's a really nice horse. He was trying to come back again in the last part, but it was a really late. I'm really happy with his effort. He's back again. He get a lot of confidence from his last race, and then I think he's gonna get even more confidence in this race. Congrats to the winners, Bob and all the team, and I'll just wait for the next race."

Right: Third place finisher Chancer McPatrick exits the tunnel for the post parade.

White Abarrio heads back to the barn after being scratched before the start by the track veterinarian. His owners have asked for an investigation into the reason why he was scratched and released a statement including the following: "White Abarrio had a PET scan at the Breeders’ Cup request, which resulted in findings normal for a race horse in training. He was also examined every day by Breeders’ Cup veterinarians in the week leading up to the race, including on the morning of the race, and the veterinarians deemed him fit to race. No problems were noted in the paddock pre-race, and Jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. stated that White Abarrio warmed up “perfectly” on the track. Despite this fact, for reasons that remain unknown, the Breeders’ Cup directed that White Abarrio be scratched right before the race was set to run."
