The $1 million PNC Bank Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) featured a field of 7 older fillies and mares (after 3 scratches) sprinting 7 furlongs on the main track. Ballerina Stakes (G1) winner Hope Road was sent off as the 11-10 favorite. In to challenge her included 11-4 second choice Splendora, winner of the Tranquility Lake Stakes, and 9-2 third choice Richi, second in the Zenyatta (G2).

Splendora (far left) rallies in the stretch.

Jockey Jose Ortiz sent Hope Road to the lead exiting the chute through fractions of 22.21 and 44.64 while pressed by 14-1 Haulin Ice and stalked by Richi. Turning fro home Hope Road tired as Splendora, 5th early under Flavien Prat, swept to the lead through 3/4 in 1:09.29. Kept to task by Prat, Splendora drew off to win by 4 3/4 lengths over late-running 10-1 Vahva in 1:21.79. It was another 1 1/4 lengths back to favorite Hope Road third.

Splendora wins the Filly and Mare Sprint.

Left: Splendora heads to the winner's circle. Winning jockey Flavien Prat said, "I honestly was a bit worried that we might have a lack of speed because of all the scratches, but the pace was fair and I was able to travel good. I really felt like I was traveling well all the way around and as soon as I was able to go around everybody, she just give me a good run."

Right: Splendora in the post parade. Winning trainer Bob Baffert said, "She has been working really well and she loves this track. I told (Flavien) Prat, when she ran here this summer, going six furlongs, she ran an incredible race and just sat off the pace. When he swooped up to the outside (today) and she took off, it was over.  Hope Road, she ran great. I thought she would be off the pace a little bit. These races, they are so tough to win."

Left: Second place finisher Vahva in the post parade. Trainer Cherie DeVaux said, "She ran great. Settled behind the speed, let them run away from her, and came with a really nice run. Really proud. The winner just had the jump on her, but she ran a huge race as well. She's been really good. When you win a lot of turf races, it's only natural to peg you into that. But she's really the first real dirt horse that has been a marquee for me as a trainer."

Right: Third place finisher and beaten favorite Hope Road in the post parade. Jockey Jose Ortiz said, "It was great. I put her into a good spot early on. I was very happy the first-quarter, then the second quarter I knew there was a little bit of pressure from the outside. If I could change that, I would, but you know, the winner looked pretty good today."
