2024 King's Plate Entries

My Boy Prince is the favorite on the morning line at 7-5 and will break from post 7.

Date: 08/13/2024

Update: Due to heavy rain and thunderstorms causing unsafe racing conditions on Saturday, the King's Plate card had to be canceled after race 5. All the stakes races have been rescheduled for Friday August 23rd.

The post positions for Saturday's $1 million King's Plate Stakes were selected during a special breakfast ceremony on Tuesday morning at the Trackside Clubhouse on the outside of the far turn of the main track, before a crowd of owners, officials, media, and horsemen. This year marks the 165th edition of the Plate, the oldest continuously-run stakes race in North America, which is run at 1 1/4 miles over the Tapeta surface at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto. The race was run as the Queen's Plate during the reigns of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II. The monarch gives the winner a prize of 50 guineas taken from the Royal Privy Purse, a tradition that began with the inaugural running in 1860 under Queen Victoria. The Plate is the premier race for Canadian-foaled 3-year-olds and the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, and this year a field of 13 made final entry. Colts and geldings carry the standard weight of 126 pounds while filly Caitlinhergrtness carries 121 pounds.

Under the traditional double blind draw (the "draft draw" was used from 1999-2022), Woodbine director of Thoroughbred Racing, Tim Lawson, drew the numbered balls while PWHL MVP and two-time Olympic gold medal winning hockey player Natalie Spooner drew the entry sheets.

My Boy Prince is the 7-5 morning line favorite for trainer Mark Casse and majority owner Gary Barber. He comes here off a 3 race win streak all at Woodbine including the King Corrie, Queenston, and Plate Trial Stakes. "He just doesn’t give a hoot about much," noted Casse, of the $115,000 sale-topper at the 2022 CTHS Canadian Premier Yearling Sale. "You sure wouldn't look at him and think that he’s some superstar. He saves it all for on the track." Sahin Civaci gets the call from post 7.

The second choice is Essex Serpent at 2-1. After winning his debut on April 27, he was second in the Queenston Stakes for trainer Mark Casse before winning the Marine Stakes (G3) for his final prep. "He came out of his race in good order," said Casse. "He's trained great since the Plate Trial. He's a big, strong, homebred horse." Patrick Husbands will be in the irons for owner-breeders Manfred and Penny Conrad in post 3.

Trainer Kevin Attard has 4 entered: Jokestar, Caitlinhergrtness, Pierre, and Bedard.
The 8-1 third choice is the maiden Rafaroo. The Stronach Stables homebred was second in his debut on June 15 and then second in the Plate Trial. "He just looks so good right now," said Ladouceur. "He seems to be maturing and coming around at the right time. It feels like we could be pointing at the stars." Ryan Munger gets the call for trainer Harold Ladouceur from post 2.

The 10-1 fourth choice is Midnight Mascot. The Mark Casse trainee started 2024 winning the Woodstock Stakes before finishing third in both the King Corrie and Marine Stakes (G3). "Midnight Mascot is interesting," said Casse. "I think we learned a lot last time out. He sat back, instead of showing speed, and made a nice run. I was very happy with his race." Kazushi Kimura returns from California to ride for owners Manfred and Penny Conrad from post 5

Post time for the Plate will be 6:10pm ET, carded as race 11 on Saturday August 17 and the race will be televised on SportsnetONE and CityTV in Canada from 4:30 - 6:00PM ET. The full card will be simulcast to many locations throughout North America as well as Bet365.net, and be broadcast on FanDuel TV in America and HPI in Canada. There are 4 stakes races on the undercard. The $200,000 bet365 King Edward Stakes (G1) for older horses going 1 mile on the turf is the major local prep for the Rogers Woodbine Mile (G1) to be run on September 14. The $150,000 Bold Venture Stakes features older horses sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs on Tapeta. There are two $159,000 stakes races for 2-year-olds going 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf: the bet3365 Soaring Free Stakes for colts and geldings, the main local prep for the Summer Stakes (G1), and the Catch a Glimpse Stakes for fillies, the prep for the Natalma Stakes (G1).
