Entries were drawn today for the 135th Kentucky Derby to be run on Saturday, May 2 for a purse of $2 million. As expected, a full field of 20 entered, despite the last minute defections of Quality Road, Square Eddie, Take the Points, and Win Willy this week alone. As expected, Wood Memorial winner I Want Revenge is the 3-1 morning line choice by handicapping Mike Battaglia, and he will break from the 13 post. Two horses share 4-1 second favoritism, Florida Derby runner-up Dunkirk in post 15, and Santa Anita Derby winner Pioneerof the Nile in 16. Louisiana Derby winner Friesan Fire, exiting post 6, is the 5-1 fourth choice with the rest of the field at 15-1 or higher, with six horses sharing the longest odds of 50-1.
This year, the draw was held in the Marquee Villiage at Churchill Downs from noon to 1pm. A random post position selection order was drawn, then the connections were allowed 5 minutes to discuss which spot to chose in the gate. Then each was called in order and given 1 minute to hang their silks in their chosen post. For those interested that order is shown below after the entries or you can view it here.
Below is the field listed in post position order with morning line odds. Be sure to click the link on each horse's name to view full info, stats, and a photo where available. A star next to the dosage index indicates a dual qualifier.
The Kentucky Derby will be televised on NBC from 4-7:00pm EDT but you can watch most of the Derby card on ESPN from 1-5:00pm. Both networks will broadcast in HD this year. Free past performances for the Derby and Oaks will be available from DRF soon. Post time for the Derby should be at 6:04pm EDT.
I Want Revenge scratched from the Kentucky Derby! Saturday morning they found some heat in his left front ankle and while he jogged sound he walked a bit off and they decided with the muddy track to be safe and scratch him. As far as anyone can remember, this is the first time the morning line favorite has scratched the morning of the Derby. Details in his profile.
