Thursday Kentucky Derby Photos

Derby favorite I Want Revenge was out on Thursday morning.
Date: 04/30/2009

It was another busy morning Thursday at Churchill Downs, but this time we were not as lucky with the weather, although the temperature was fine. It was cloudy at dawn but no rain until the track was closed for the break at 8am, when it started to drizzle. The rain continued to pick up as the morning went on and by 9am it was raining fairly steady and getting harder. Around noon it started to slack off and we might get through the rest of the afternoon without more rain.

Here are photos 12 of the Kentucky Derby horses, including 6 new ones I didn't see before, plus 2 new Oaks fillies with comments on what they did. Click the small photo to see a larger verson.

Advice schooled in the paddock during the 6th race on Thursday afternoon along with his stablemate Dunkirk. Trainer Todd Pletcher took them through the whole routine, even saddling them. Earlier in the day, he galloped 1 3/8 miles but he wasn't wearing his named saddle cloth.

Chocolate Candy stood in the starting gate and then galloped 1 3/8 miles under exercise rider Lindsey Molina before the break.

Dunkirk schooled in the paddock during the 6th race on Thursday afternoon along with his stablemate Advice. Trainer Todd Pletcher took them through the whole routine, even saddling them. Earlier in the day, he galloped 1 3/8 miles but he wasn't wearing his named saddle cloth.

Friesan Fire came out after the rennovation break for a gallop with his trainer Larry Jones aboard.

General Quarters galloped 1 1/2 miles under exercise rider Julie Sheets early this morning as usual.

I Want Revenge came out before the break and jogged in the mile chute for a while, then made an easy lap around the track. Later in the day he schooled in the paddock.

Join in the Dance schooled in the paddock just before noon with several other Todd Pletcher trainees. He probably needed it as he was a bit wild and jumpy. Pletcher saddled him in the training stall then he walked around the paddock several times. Earlier in the day, he galloped 1 3/8 miles but he wasn't wearing his named saddle cloth.

Mine That Bird was out before the break and galloped two miles.

Mr. Hot Stuff was out shortly after 7am to gallop 1 1/2 miles. He also schooled in the paddock in the afternoon.

Musket Man was also out early and galloped 1 1/2 miles.

Pioneerof the Nile came out right after the break and took a 1 1/2 mile gallop in the rain.

Summer Bird also came out after the break and galloped one mile under jockey Chris Rosier. He also schooled in the starting gate.

Justwhistledixie was out about 7am for her gallop.

Rachel Alexandra came out after the break and took a couple of laps, looking quite frisky.
