The $2 million FanDuel Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance features 2-year-old colts and geldings going 1 1/16 miles on the main track in a race that usually determines the early Kentucky Derby favorite for next year. After 2 scratches, just six went to post with Hughes sent off as the 4-5 favorite of wins in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and American Pharoah (G1). In to challenge him included 4-1 second choice American History, winner of the Breeders' Futurity (G1), and 9-2 third choice Salahudin, winner of the Iroquois (G3).

Hughes draws off in the stretch.

Jockey Luis Saez sent 13-1 Damavand to the lead first time by through fractions of 23.36 and 46.65 while pressed by Hughes and stalked by 5-1 fourth choice Coach Pope. On the far turn Damavand tired allowing Hughes to take over through 3/4 in 1:10.86. Kept to task by Flavien Prat, Hughes drew off late to win by 2 1/4 lengths over late-running American History in 1:42.27. It was a head back to Salahudin third.

Left: Hughes heads to the winner's circle. Winning trainer Bob Baffert said, "He had never been battled tested so I didn't know how he was going to react. When we worked him a couple works back, he got behind horses and he was working and there were a group of horses 5-6 lengths in front of him and he came up to them behind and just went around them. He's so light on his feet. Everyone who gets off him says he's like a cheetah. He skips over the ground and he comes back and he never takes a deep breath. Today we saw something we were hoping to see, but you knew he was going to have to take it to the next level."

Right: Hughes heads back to the barn after the race. Winning jockey Flavien Prat said, "His trip was good. He was going to switch off around the (first) turn and I don't know if someone hit his heel because then he got keen on me. Once I got going into the last turn, he finally dropped the bridle, took a breather, and not where I wanted to do it, but he did and then he was game after that. I didn't know if he was going to be good enough to give me a run but he did. When he turned for home, he made a really good move. I was a bit worried (American History) was making a run on us but my horse was good enough."

Left: Second place finisher American History returns after the race. Trainer Todd Pletcher said, "(John Velazquez) said he had a pretty rough trip around the first turn, even clipped heels a couple times. When he got him back and out in the clear he regrouped and came on a little bit. But Johnny said the first turn was pretty rough. The horse was trying to lean on him in the middle of the (second) turn and Johnny was trying to hold him in, but I thought more significant was the (trouble in) the first turn. He got beat by the favorite, who ran a great race. Could have been closer with a better trip around the first turn. Who knows."

Right: Third place finisher Salahudin returns after the race. Jockey Tyler Gaffalione said, "It was a good race. I took a lot of pressure. Johnny's horse (American History) was laying on us the whole way, even more so coming down the stretch, just never really gave us much of a chance."
