The $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) featured a field of 11 older fillies and mares (after 2 scratches) sprinting 7 furlongs on the main track. Ways and Means was sent off as the 21-20 favorite off wins in the Bed O'Roses (G2) and Ballerina (G1). In to challenge her included 6-1 second choice Explora, second in the Dogwood (G3) after winning the Test (G1), and 13-2 third choice Sweet Azteca, winner of the Great Lady M (G2) and Rancho Bernardo (G3).

Jockey Edwin Gonzalez sent 50-1 Kerry's Kiss to the lead out of the chute through fractions of 22.14 and 44.75 while pressed by 17-2 R Disaster and stalked by Sweet Azteca. Turning for home the pacesetters tired as Ways and Means, 5th early under Flavien Prat, found room to surge to the lead through 3/4 in 1:09.48. Kept to task by Prat, Ways and Means drew off to win by 6 1/4 lengths over late-running 21-1 Foie Gras in 1:21.76. It was another 1/2 length back to Explora third.

Ways and Means wins the Filly and Mare Sprint.

Left: Ways and Means heads to the winner's circle. Winning trainer Chad Brown said, “Very pleased. I’m most happy for the filly because she got to show what she could do on a neutral racetrack today against some of the best sprinters in the country and shake that label of maybe just being effective at Saratoga. What she loved is training at Saratoga and I finally figured that out. She can take her racetrack with her as long as she’s training at home.”

Right: Ways and Means heads back to the barn after the race. Owner Seth Klarman added, “We saw talent. She did the things amazing horses do, winning by large margins, overcoming some amount of adversity as well. We just couldn't be happier that she had a chance to show who she really is today. She’s done everything a race mare can do. You hate to lose her off the track, but she’s 5 and it’s time for her second career.” She will go though the Fasig-Tipton sale on Monday.

Ways and Means in the post parade. Winning jockey Flavien Prat said, “She jumped well, and I was in a good position. Then, I was forced to stay inside a bit, so I had to engage her a bit earlier than I wanted to. She really responded well. It felt great.”

Left: Second place finisher Foie Gras in the post parade. Trainer Mike Maker said, “Second best. She was further back than I expected her to bean, but, then again, she ran her race. No one was going to beat the winner today. Nothing wrong with finishing second to her.” Jockey Joel Rosario added, She kept trying and trying and got up (for second) in the last jump. Going into the race, I knew the Ways and Means was the one to beat but you never know what can happen. You just keep running and hope you can catch her.”

Right: Third place finisher and beaten favorite Explora in the post parade. Jockey Jose Ortiz said, “She ran very good. She broke well, the pace was fast (up front), she sat behind them and made a good run. The winner was really good today as you saw.” Trainer Bob Baffert added, “The only way I could win was if the good ones didn’t bring their ‘A’ games. We brought our ‘A game, but she lost a lot of ground and had to come wide. That was a salty race."
