Sovereignty wins the Classic

Defending champion Forever Young was sent off as the 7-4 favorite off his win in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) after finishing second in the Dubai World Cup (G1). Turning for home, Knightsbridge continued to lead through 1 mile in 1:36.26, as Sovereignty, 5th early, came out 4 wide to sweep to the front. Sovereignty returns after the race. Winning trainer Bill Mott said, “He really is very special. We might not see another one like that. You saw what he did. It was a tremendous run. He had a good year last year and we ended up this year great. He is a phenomenal horse. You beat a world class field, Forever Young, great horses, the best they could bring over here. He deserved this and he got them today. But this was big today because there were some doubters. I think we proved our position. We proved what we needed to prove."

Winning jockey Junior Alvarado said, “Bittersweet. I can't believe they're going to retire him after this performance. He doesn't owe us anything and he's got his next career. I'm very glad that we ended (his) career the way we did today. At the 5/8 pole, I felt already like a winner. He was dragging me. I just couldn't wait to turn for home to release him. The training job that Bill did with this horse, I don't think nobody can understand how great you have to be to do something to get a horse to perform like he did today."

Nitrogen wins the Distaff

The $2 million Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) featured a field of 7 older fillies and mares (after 2 scratches) going 1 1/8 miles on the main track. Ogden Phipps (G1) and Whitney (G1) runner-u Nitrogen was sent off as the 4-5 favorite off her win in the Beldame (G2). In to challenge her included 3-2 second choice Fully Subscribed, winner of the Personal Ensign (G1) and Spinster (G1), and 12-1 third choice Super Corredora, winner of the Zenyatta Stakes (G2).

Jockey Joel Rosario sent Super Corredora to the lead first time by through fractions of 23.57, 47.04, and 1:11.22 while pressed by 15-1 Eunomia and stalked by Nitrogen. Into the stretch Super Corredora tired as Nitrogen took over the lead through 1 mile in 1:35.96. Kept to task by Jose Ortiz, Nitrogen drew off to win by 2 lengths over late-running Fully Subscribed in 1:48.90. It was another 2 1/4 lengths back to 27-1 Measure third.

Nitrogen heads back to the barn after the race. Winning trainer Mark Casse said, “She’s up there, she’s special. To be so good on the turf and the dirt is just amazing. She amazes me. I thought she would be a little closer to be honest. But I could see Jose ask her. It takes her a second to kind of kick in but she’s something. That’s her. She does that (drifts out) every race. I think she loves the crowd. That was one of the factors in the decision to go to the Distaff versus the Classic. We wanted to get her a Breeders’ Cup win and we’ll probably take a different path next year which will include going against some colts.”

Winning jockey Jose Ortiz said, “She felt great. She broke well, let me put her in a good position, and she relaxed. When I asked her to go, she was full of run. I saw [Fully Subscribed] behind me at the 3/8 pole. I drifted out a little bit in the stretch. She has a tendency to do that. But it seemed like I was clear.”

T O Elvis wins the Sprint

The $2 million Cygames Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) featured a field of 13 older sprinters going 6 furlongs. Englishman was sent off as the 4-5 favorite off wins in the Woody Stephens (G1) and Allen Jerkens Memorial (G1) at Saratoga. In to challenge him included 11-4 second choice T O Elvis, unraced since winning the Churchill Downs Stakes (G1) on the Kentucky Derby undercard, and 19-2 third choice Listenupshance, winner of the Bing Crosby (G1) and Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G2).

20-1 Liam Smith was quickest out of the chute through an opening quarter in 21.68 before Englishman took over through a half in 44.42 while pressed by Liam Smith and stalked by 32-1 Hymn. Turning for home Englishman opened up a 3 length lead through 5f in 55.98 but T O Elvis, 9th early under Ryusei Sakai, came out 5 wide for room and rallied to win going away by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:08.20. It was a long 4 lengths back to Liam Smith third.

T O Elvis heads back to the barn after the race. Winning trainer Daisuke Takayanagi said, “I was a little concerned because he was coming off a layoff, but his condition had been improving steadily. At that point, all we could do was give it our best and leave the rest to the jockey. "We had discussed settling him off the pace if the early pace was fast, and we wanted to stick to the way he had raced in Japan. In the end, we trusted his finishing kick. Just like in the Churchill Downs Stakes, he gradually made his way through the field, and I think he did a great job to get the win.”

Winning owner Tomoya Ozasa said, “It's so impressive, his wonderful turn of foot is great, and Ryusei (Sakai) gave him the very best ride.”

Further Ado wins the Dirt Mile

The $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) featured a field of 10 older horses (after 1 scratch) going 1 mile on the main track. Blue Grass Stakes (G1) winner Further Ado was sent off as the even-money favorite off a close second in the Pennsylvania Derby (G1). In to challenge him included 5-1 second choice Bracket Buster, second in the Parx Dirt Mile after winning the West Virginia Governor's Stakes, and 7-1 third choice Full Serrano, third in the Pacific Classic (G1).

Jockey Joel Rosario sent Full Serrano to the lead first time by through fractions of 22.67 and 46.14 while pressed by 9-1 fourth choice Owen Almighty and stalked by 30-1 T Kraft. Turning for home, Owen Almighty came out for room to take over through 3/4 in 1:10.04 and 7f in 1:22.20. Favorite Further Ado, 4th early under Flavien Prat, rallied and outfinished Owen Almighty to win by a nose in a tight photo finish in 1:34.50. It was another 2 lengths back to Full Serrano third.

Further Ado heads back to the barn after the race. Winning trainer Brad Cox said, “I had no clue (at the finish) if we had won. It was very important to try and make this horse a dual G1 winner at the age of 3. And listen I think there is a little bit of question mark with the distances with him. I think he wants more than a mile but I wasn’t convinced we wanted to tackle 1 1/4 miles against older horses just yet.”

Winning jockey Flavien Prat said, “I thought I was ahead of him, but he had a good bob, so I didn't know! I was traveling well all the way around. We turned for home, and he gave me a good run. Owen Almighty just was tough.”

Ways and Means wins the Filly and Mare Sprint

The $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) featured a field of 11 older fillies and mares (after 2 scratches) sprinting 7 furlongs on the main track. Ways and Means was sent off as the 21-20 favorite off wins in the Bed O'Roses (G2) and Ballerina (G1). In to challenge her included 6-1 second choice Explora, second in the Dogwood (G3) after winning the Test (G1), and 13-2 third choice Sweet Azteca, winner of the Great Lady M (G2) and Rancho Bernardo (G3).

Jockey Edwin Gonzalez sent 50-1 Kerry's Kiss to the lead out of the chute through fractions of 22.14 and 44.75 while pressed by 17-2 R Disaster and stalked by Sweet Azteca. Turning for home the pacesetters tired as Ways and Means, 5th early under Flavien Prat, found room to surge to the lead through 3/4 in 1:09.48. Kept to task by Prat, Ways and Means drew off to win by 6 1/4 lengths over late-running 21-1 Foie Gras in 1:21.76. It was another 1/2 length back to Explora third.

Ways and Means heads back to the barn after the race. Winning trainer Chad Brown said, “Very pleased. I’m most happy for the filly because she got to show what she could do on a neutral racetrack today against some of the best sprinters in the country and shake that label of maybe just being effective at Saratoga. What she loved is training at Saratoga and I finally figured that out. She can take her racetrack with her as long as she’s training at home.”
