Aidan O'Brien's string returning from their canter after clearing quarantine.

World Championships
Breeders' Cup Workouts

Date: 11/01/2022

Tuesday morning was again overcast during training at Keeneland with temperatures near 60, and the main track rated fast and turf firm. European horses cleared quarantine on Monday evening so many of them were out this morning on the main track, training track, and turf course. There were more horses were out today as well as many more people on the apron watching the workouts.

Here are photos for 56 of the horses on the track Tuesday morning with very few repeats from Monday. Click the small picture to see a larger version.

horse racing breeders cup Hot Rod Charlie (Classic) galloped 1 1/8 miles under exercise rider Connor Murray. Trainer Doug O'Neill said, "With the Breeders' Cup being here it seemed like it would be an asset (to have him in training at Keeneland). I'm really happy with the way he looks weight-wise and energy-wise. He's a happy horse right now."
horse racing breeders cup Taiba (Classic) galloped twice around. Trainer Bob Baffert said,  "He's a 3-year-old that was sort of thrown into the deep end right away. He's recovered from that and ran a respectful race in the Haskell, then came back and won the Penn Derby. I think he's a horse that's just going to get better. He reminds me a lot of his sire. Gun Runner got better as he got older. It's a tall order. You got these two brilliant horses, Flightline and Life Is Good. And they are 4-year-olds. If they were 3-year-olds it would be different. But they are 4-year-olds, so they're at their max right now. I've never won it with a 4-year-old. I've won it with 3-year-olds and because they were so good they were retired."
horse racing breeders cup Broome (Turf) cantered one lap clockwise along the outside rail of the main track with the rest of the Ballydoyle string. Trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "It's great to be back here, it's always a highlight of our year to come to the Breeders' Cup. The lads are delighted with the horses and how they traveled so we're ready for a big week. They just had a hack around the main track this morning which is what we'd always do on the first day of training just to let them have a look around."
horse racing breeders cup Channel Maker (Turf) is an Ontario-bred 8-year-old making his 6th Breeders' Cup appearance. He was fifth in the Turf last year at Del Mar, but he finished third in the Turf in 2020 at Keeneland, his best finish ever in a Breeders' Cup race.
horse racing breeders cup Mishriff (Turf) galloped on the training track. Anthony Proctor, assistant to trainers John and Thady Gosden said, "You can't discount Mishriff. It'll be his last race on Saturday before retirement. He's been a wonderful horse who has taken us around the world so he will be a big loss to the yard. He's wearing blinkers for the first time on Saturday which should sharpen him up."
horse racing breeders cup Nations Pride (Turf) galloped once around on the turf. Maria Murphy, assistant to trainer Charlie Appleby said, "The team are very happy with the horses. They traveled over very well and seem in good form. They went out on the turf this morning doing light exercise. Charlie arrives today so he will be here tomorrow for training."
horse racing breeders cup Rebel's Romance (Turf) galloped once around on the turf. Maria Murphy, assistant to trainer Charlie Appleby said, "The team are very happy with the horses. They traveled over very well and seem in good form. They went out on the turf this morning doing light exercise. Charlie arrives today so he will be here tomorrow for training."
horse racing breeders cup Stone Age (Turf) cantered one lap clockwise along the outside rail of the main track with the rest of the Ballydoyle string. Trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "It's great to be back here, it's always a highlight of our year to come to the Breeders' Cup. The lads are delighted with the horses and how they traveled so we're ready for a big week. They just had a hack around the main track this morning which is what we'd always do on the first day of training just to let them have a look around."
horse racing breeders cup War Like Goddess (Turf) galloped twice around the main track. "She's as good a turf horse as we've got in our country," trainer Bill Mott said. "That doesn't mean she has to win on Saturday, but she's a competitor and she's done very well throughout her entire career. We've won the race a couple times and it would be really nice to win it with a filly. With her, it happens to be the distance. I think that she's a true 1 3/8, 1 1/2 mile horse and we wanted to get her in that type of race and that's what we did last time. We ran her against the boys and she pulled it off. She was very good. 1 3/16 was probably just a little short for her. That doesn't she couldn't get up, but I think she's a little more effective (going longer), and it is a big purse."
horse racing breeders cup Above the Curve (Filly & Mare Turf) cantered one lap clockwise along the outside rail of the main track with the rest of the Ballydoyle string. Trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "It's great to be back here, it's always a highlight of our year to come to the Breeders' Cup. The lads are delighted with the horses and how they traveled so we're ready for a big week. They just had a hack around the main track this morning which is what we'd always do on the first day of training just to let them have a look around."
horse racing breeders cuphorse racing breeders cup Lady Speightspeare (Filly & Mare Turf) comes here off a 3 race win streak all at Woodbine, the Nassau (G2), Trillium (G3), and Seaway (G3) for trainer Roger Attfield.
horse racing breeders cup Moira (Filly & Mare Turf) galloped twice around. Trainer Kevin Attard said, "We're trying to work on her antics. She always schools pretty decently. Obviously on race day, it is a bit of a different story." Groom Peter Lopez added, "I love everything about her, to be honest. The way she carries herself, the way she competes. I just love everything about her. She is always a force when she runs, and I know that she will give it her all at the Breeders' Cup. She does have two personalities. She can get a little excited after the races, like in the winner's circle, but in the barn, she's very quiet. She's one of the quietest horses in the barn. When you are walking her, she puts her head down and you can lead her to where she needs to be, and she doesn't do a thing. She's a sweetheart."
horse racing breeders cup Toy (Filly & Mare Turf) cantered one lap clockwise along the outside rail of the main track with the rest of the Ballydoyle string. Trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "It's great to be back here, it's always a highlight of our year to come to the Breeders' Cup. The lads are delighted with the horses and how they traveled so we're ready for a big week. They just had a hack around the main track this morning which is what we'd always do on the first day of training just to let them have a look around."
horse racing breeders cup Tuesday (Filly & Mare Turf) cantered one lap clockwise along the outside rail of the main track with the rest of the Ballydoyle string. Trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "It's great to be back here, it's always a highlight of our year to come to the Breeders' Cup. The lads are delighted with the horses and how they traveled so we're ready for a big week. They just had a hack around the main track this morning which is what we'd always do on the first day of training just to let them have a look around."
horse racing breeders cup Beyond Brilliant (Mile) won the City of Hope Mile (G1) last out at Santa Anita for trainer John Shirreffs.
horse racing breeders cup Domestic Spending (Mile) is unraced since finishing 2nd in the 2021 Mr. D Stakes(G1) at Arlington Park. He worked 5f on the Keeneland turf in 1:02.60 on October 29 for trainer Chad Brown.
horse racing breeders cup Dreamloper (Mile) galloped once around. "We are going to find out if he needed the benefit of that prep race," trainer Chad Brown said. "It's a likely possibility that it will affect him – I'm not confused about that – but there's also a chance that he's such a brilliant racehorse that he can overcome it, especially if the dynamics of the race fall right for him. Being a Kingman and having a nice mile win under him back when he was younger give me a little confidence, as well as coming off a layoff. Hopefully that leads to him being a little sharper and gives him a little better position at a mile."
horse racing breeders cup Kinross (Mile) comes here off a 4 race win streak including the Prix de la Foret (G1) and British Champions Sprint (G1) for trainer Ralph Beckett.
horse racing breeders cup Malavath (Mile) is winless since the 2021 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte, but was second in the Prix de la Foret (G1) last out for trainer Francis-Henri Graffard.
horse racing breeders cup Modern Games (Mile) galloped once around on the turf. Maria Murphy, assistant to trainer Charlie Appleby said, "The team are very happy with the horses. They traveled over very well and seem in good form. They went out on the turf this morning doing light exercise. Charlie arrives today so he will be here tomorrow for training."
horse racing breeders cup Order of Australia (Mile) cantered one lap clockwise along the outside rail of the main track with the rest of the Ballydoyle string. Trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "It's great to be back here, it's always a highlight of our year to come to the Breeders' Cup. The lads are delighted with the horses and how they traveled so we're ready for a big week. They just had a hack around the main track this morning which is what we'd always do on the first day of training just to let them have a look around."

horse racing breeders cup Ce Ce (Filly & Mare Sprint) galloped 1 1/4 miles as she prepares to defend her title in the Filly & Mare Sprint in her final career start. "It looks like she's just as good as she was last year. She's kind of followed the same pattern to get here. It was little bit more of a boutique size field last time in the Breeders' Cup and obviously a full field here on Saturday. She's doing as well as we can ask for. We're happy with the draw (post four) and everything is going well."
horse racing breeders cup Goodnight Olive (Filly & Mare Sprint) campaigned by First Row Partners and Team Hanley, boasts a near-perfect ledger of 6-5-1-0 and earnings just shy of $500,000. She burst into the Breeders’ Cup conversation with a cool 2 3/4-length triumph in the Grade 1 Ballerina on August 28 at the Spa to extend her win streak to 5-in-a-row. She is the 3-1 morning line favorite.
horse racing breeders cup Obligatory (Filly & Mare Sprint) won the Derby City Distaff (G1) before finishing second in the Bed o'Roses (G2) and third in the Ballerina (G1) for trainer Bill Mott.
horse racing breeders cup Slammed (Filly & Mare Sprint) won the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2) at Keeneland last out for trainer Todd Fincher.
horse racing breeders cup Bran (Turf Sprint) galloped once around under exercise rider Juan Leyva. Trainer John Sadler said, "He has exceeded our expectations. I don't know if he is a Grade 1 horse, but we'll find out. He had a nice breeze Friday (4f in 48 2/5) and handled it fine. He got to work on grass which is something we can't do in California. (Jockey Vincent Cheminaud) gave Bran a tremendous ride at Churchill Downs (in the May 6 Turf Sprint) at 40-1 and nearly won, and he rode him really well at Kentucky Downs. I didn't know him before, but my French acquaintances said he was a good rider. He has a good rapport with the horse."
horse racing breeders cup Caravel (Turf Sprint) won the Franklin Stakes (G3) last out at Keeneland for trainer Brad Cox.

horse racing breeders cup Highfield Princess (Turf Sprint) galloped on the training track. Trainer John Quinn said,  "It's wonderful to be back at the Breeders' Cup. Highfield Princess has traveled over great and Con Foley who is with her reports he couldn't be happier. She did some light exercise this morning and moved well. She's eaten up and drinking well so all is good. I'm delighted with the draw in gate six. Obviously Golden Pal sets the standard but there's also some very good horses in the race which you have to respect. Tomorrow she'll do similar as today, light exercise and her jockey Jason Hart will be here to ride her. She'll go for a spin on the turf on Thursday with an easy day Friday. Her owner Mr. (John) Fairley arrives with his family on Thursday and they're very excited, and why shouldn't they be!"
horse racing breeders cup Naval Crown (Turf Sprint) galloped once around on the turf. Maria Murphy, assistant to trainer Charlie Appleby said, "The team are very happy with the horses. They traveled over very well and seem in good form. They went out on the turf this morning doing light exercise. Charlie arrives today so he will be here tomorrow for training."

horse racing breeders cup Packs a Wahlop (Juvenile Turf) galloped twice around. Trainer Jeff Mullins said, "He can run all day. My son had a string at Gulfstream and it was easy to ship there after we bought him in April at OBS (for $270,000). He had a really good stride on the track at Ocala and you could tell distance would not be a problem for him. He's going to be forwardly placed. But, you can plan all you want until the gates open. However I don't have to tell (jockey Mike Smith) anything. He's been around for a while."
horse racing breeders cup Silver Knott (Juvenile Turf) galloped once around on the turf. Maria Murphy, assistant to trainer Charlie Appleby said, "The team are very happy with the horses. They traveled over very well and seem in good form. They went out on the turf this morning doing light exercise. Charlie arrives today so he will be here tomorrow for training."

horse racing breeders cup Tyler's Tribe (Juvenile Turf Sprint) galloped once around on the turf course. Trainer Tim Martin said, "We did the turf today, walk Wednesday, go to the gate Thursday and won't go to the track Friday morning. I'm Quarter horse training; I want him fresh and fast! The 10 is fine; he broke his maiden from there. On the dirt, he has a fast cruising speed and I'd like to see him get out of the gate good and then settle. He's a fast horse and the speed (Speed Boat Beach and The Platinum Queen) is outside of us. If they want the lead, they are going to have to go around us." The colt is named for the followers of owner Tom Lepic's grandson Tyler Juhl, who was declared cancer free last week in his battle with leukemia. "There are going to be watch parties all over the state and there will be about a hundred Iowans here for the race. We never ever had even a thought of selling. We had a lot of awfully good offers but it was never considered. He's a family horse, a horse that means so much more than just to our family but to the Leukemia Foundation. He will stay with our family and Tim Martin his entire life."
