 Taiba gets a bath on Friday before the 2022 Haskell Invitational |
The $1 million TVG.com Haskell Stakes (G1) is New Jersey's most prestigious race, featuring some of the top East Coast 3-year-olds going 1 1/8 miles over the main track at historic Monmouth Park in Oceanport, looking for automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) under the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series "Win and You're In" promotion.
A field of just 8 made final entry, with Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Taiba drawing post 2 as the 7-5 morning line favorite, unraced since his disappointing 12th place finish in the Kentucky Derby (G1). Regular rider Mike Smith will be in the irons again for trainer Bob Baffert. Jack Christopher is the 3-2 second choice out of post 7, undefeated so far including the Champagne (G1), Pat Day Mile (G2), and Woody Stephens (G1). Jose Ortiz, who has been aboard for all 4 lifetime starts, gets the call for trainer Chad Brown. White Abarrio is the 5-1 third choice for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. After winning the Florida Derby (G1) he disappointed 16th in the Kentucky Derby then was second in the Ohio Derby (G3) New jockey Joel Rosario picks up the mount from post 5.

Taiba gallops on Thursday morning and schooled in the paddock Friday. Trainer Bob Baffert, who leads all trainers with 9 Haskell wins, said, "We know he's very talented. But we don't know that much about him. He's still learning. We don't even know what his real race style is."
Cyberknife schooling in the paddock on Friday. He drew the rail as the 6-1 fourth choice off his win in the Matt Winn Stakes (G3) after finishing 18th in the Kentucky Derby. Trainer Brad Cox said, "Based off how he trains and how he runs in the afternoon, there's more in the tank. I think we'll have to see the best of Cyberknife if he's going to win." Regular rider Florent Geroux retains the mount.
Bonny South is Cyberknife's stablemate in the Brad Cox barn and is entered in the Molly Pitcher Stakes (G3) on the undercard. The 5-year-old mare finished 4th in the Ogden Phipps (G1) at Belmont after finishing second in the Doubledogdare (G3) at Keeneland, and is winless since the 2021 Doubledogdare. Florent Geroux rides the 3-1 morning line second choice from the outside post 7.
