As everyone celebrates the holidays, it is time to bid farewell to 2025 and the exciting racing which we enjoyed, however much like at the end of 2024, many of us are glad to be done with 2025. This year had some outstanding horses and great feats by both equine and human athletes, but we also had some sad losses to mourn. Here's a look back at the best and worst of the 2025 racing season.

White Abarrio winning the Pegasus World Cup Invitational
The first big day of racing in 2025 is the Pegasus World Cup Invitational, run at Gulfstream Park for a $3 million purse, unchanged since the reduction in 2020. 11-2 second choice White Abarrio powered away to a 6 1/4 length win over 9-5 favorite Locked with Skippylongstocking third. The co-feature saw 8-1 Spirit of St Louis outfinish 7-2 second choice Integration in the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf, with 64-1 longest shot Chasing the Crown third and favorite Integration 9th

The $20 million Saudi Cup on February 22 is world's richest horse race, contested at 1 1/8 miles on dirt. 9-4 second choice Forever Young outfinished 4-5 favorite Romantic Warrior by a neck with 34-1 Ushba Tesoro third. On the undercard, Byzantine Dream won the $2.5 million Red Sea Turf Handicap, Straight No Chaser won the $1.5 million Riyadh Dirt Sprint, Ascoli Piceno won the $2 million 1351 Turf Sprint, Shin Emperor won the $2 million Neom Turf Cup, and Golden Vekoma took the $1.5 million Saudi Derby.

Hit Show winning the Dubai World Cup

A month later the eyes of the racing world moved further east on the Arabian Peninsula to Meydan for the $12 million Dubai World Cup. 41-1 longshot Hit Show won the headliner with Florent Geroux aboard for Brad Cox. 29-1 Mixto was second and 1-2 favorite Forever Young third. On the undercard, 13-1 Soul Rush rallied to win the Dubai Turf by a nose over 1-5 favorite Romantic Warrior, Danon Decile won the Sheema Claasic, Dark Saffron took the Golden Shaheen, and Admire Daytona won the UAE Derby.

Sovereignty wins the Kentucky Derby
At the Kentucky Derby, 21 horses made final entry but after 2 scratches, 19 loaded into the gate before the 147,406 fans in attendance 8-1 third choice Sovereignty drew off to win by 1 1/2 lengths over 3-1 favorite Journalism with 14-1 Baeza third. Two weeks later at the Preakness, the last to be run before the aging Pimlico grandstand, even money favorite Journalism held off 15-1 Gosger by 1/2 a length with 13-2 third choice Sandman third, after Sovereignty's connections did not enter, opting to rest for the Belmont. 5-2 second choice Sovereignty took the Belmont Stakes, with 2-1 favorite Journalism second and 7-2 third choice Baeza third. The race was run at Saratoga at a shorter distance of 1 1/4 miles for the second straight year, and will return to Saratoga again in 2026 as Belmont Park is being rebuilt.

Mansetti wins the King's Plate
The Canadian Triple Crown begins in mid August, a change retained since COVID restrictions in 2020. The King's Plate, North America's oldest continuously run stakes race, was won gate-to-wire by 18-1 longshot Mansetti for trainer Kevin Attard and jockey Pietro Moran, with 11-2 third choice Tom's Magic second and 7-2 favorite Notorious Gangster third. In the Prince of Wales Stakes 8-1 Runaway Again under Ryan Munger rallied past pacesetter and 8-5 favorite Mansetti to win by 1/2 a length with 9-2 third choice Faber third. With no Triple Crown on the line, 3-5 favorite Tom's Magic won the Breeders' Stakes by a head over Borealis Trail with Faber third.

Forever Young winning the Breeders' Cup Classic
The Breeders' Cup World Championships were held at Del Mar in San Diego County, California for the fourth time and the second year in a row. The 42nd Breeders' Cup kicked off with "Future Stars Friday" featuring all the 2-year-old races, starting with the Juvenile Turf Sprint won by Cy Fair with Irad Ortiz Jr. in the irons. Ted Noffey won the feature, the Juvenile, making him an early choice for the 2026 Kentucky Derby. Saturday was highlighted by the Classic, where 7-2 second choice Forever Young held off defending champ 4-1 third choice Sierra Leone by 1/2 a length with 3-1 Fierceness third. Longshot Ethical Diamond won the Turf with jockey Dylan McMonagle, defeating Rebel's Romance and El Cordobes. Scylla and jockey Junior Alvarado won the Distaff over Nitrogen and Regaled. Earlier on the card, Gezora won the Filly and Mare Turf with Mickael Barzalona aboard, over She Feels Pretty and Diamond Rain. Bentornato won the Sprint over Imagination and Nysos won the Dirt Mile. The Championships will return to Keeneland in 2026, on October 30-31, and to the rebuilt Belmont Park in 2027, on October 29-30..

One story repeated in this space over recent years finally came to a conclusion as trainer Bob Baffert's suspension from Churchill Downs tracks meant he again was able to run in the Kentucky Derby. Thankfully, racehorse breakdowns or drug positives were not prominent in the headlines in 2025, instead replaced by another threat to the sport's well-being, which is the rise in computer-assisted wagering, where high rollers are given advantages regular bettors do not have, such as back door access to betting pools and data, with the ability to place thousands of bets in the final seconds before pools close at the start of a race. Late odds drops happening mid-race, and unusually low exotic payouts, can be attributed to this.

The start of the 2025 Belmont Stakes
As mentioned above, the 2025 Preakness Stakes was the last to be run at old Pimlico, as the old grandstand and barn areas were demolished soon after, the first stage of a massive redevelopment of the property. To allow for this rebuild to occur, the Preakness will be run at Laurel Park in 2026 and then return home in 2027, at which time the Laurel property will be demolished for other uses. Pimlico will become the year-round home of racing in Maryland, with stable space for 400 horses, a 5000 seat grandstand, a 1000-seat event space, hotel, sports book, restaurants, infield festival space, and a 2000-space parking garage. With the loss of Laurel for stabling, Shamrock Farms was purchased for use as a training center and barn space for another 800 horses. One plan originally floated was to rotate the track about 30 degrees but that was scrapped as a cost-saving measure.

The redevelopment at Belmont Park continues with the new grandstand to be ready in time for the 2027 Belmont Stakes; the track will also host the 2027 Breeders' Cup World Championships. In Canada, horse racing west of the Rocky Mountains came to an abrupt end as Fraser Downs, the harness track in Surrey, British Columbia, closed its doors for good in August, followed shortly after by nearby Hastings Park in Vancouver, whose 2025 closing day in October was announced in December to be the track's last. Both tracks were run by casino operator Great Canadian Entertainment, which also runs the casino at Woodbine in Toronto.

Romantic Warrior wins the Longines Hong Kong Cup for the fourth year in a row

Foreign racing continues to attract more and more attention in North America with increased availability of betting outlets and TV coverage. In the Melbourne Cup, the "race that stops a nation", Half Yours rallied by Goodie Two Shoes and Middle Earth, with jockey Jamie Melham the second female rider to win, exactly 10 years after Michelle Payne's historic win. In late November, 3-1 second choice Calandagan won the Japan Cup over Masquerade Ball and Denon Decile with regular rider Mickael Barzalona in the irons for trainer Francis-Henri Graffard, as the first foreign-trained winner in 20 years. The year closed out with the Longines Hong Kong International Races at Sha Tin. 1-10 favorite Romantic Warrior rallied to win the Hong Kong Cup by 1 1/2 lengths over Bellagio Opera and Quisisana, with James McDonald aboard for trainer Danny Shum completing the first ever four-peat in Cup history. Sosie took the Vase for jockey Maxime Guyon and trainer Andre Fabre, over last year's winner Giavellotto and Goliath. Ka Ying Rising won the Sprint for local trainer David Hayes and jockey Zac Purton for the second year in a row, over Helios Express and Satono Reve. Voyage Bubble repeated in the Mile over Soul Rush with Red Lion third, under regular rider Zac Purton for trainer Ricky Yiu.

Calandagan wins the Japan Cup

European racing gives out its awards in November. Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, QIPCO Champion, and Japan Cup winner Calandagan was named Cartier Horse of the Year as well as champion Older Horse. Delacroix was named champion 3-year-old colt, Minnie Hauk is champion 3-year-old filly, Asfoora is champion sprinter, Trawlerman is champion stayer, Gstaad took the 2-year-old colt award, and Precise is the champion 2-year-old filly.

Of course, with all the excitement and joy the sport brings, there are always losses each year. Many horses lost their lives due to injury while others succumbed to illness or old age. Here are some of the notable losses in 2025, both human and equine, with links to articles about each. If we missed someone, please let us know.
