2025 Breeders Crown Friday Results

Dateline: 10/24/2025

The 2025 Breeders Crown, North American harness racing's year-end championships, are at Woodbine Mohawk Park in Campbellville west of Toronto. The 4 races for juveniles are run on Friday night with the remaining 8 championship races are run on Saturday. It was a typical fall evening in Southern Ontario, with clear skies, minimal wind, and a temperature of 9 C (48 F) at the start of the card, but this dropped down to 6.5 C (44 F) by the time the Colt and Gelding Pace result was declared official at 11PM. All Breeders Crown races are rated Grade 1 under the new Standardbred Graded Stakes system, and contested at the standard 1 mile distance, a 2-turn trip over Mohawk Park's 7/8 mile stonedust track rated fast.

The highlight of the evening was the $700,000 (all purses U.S.) 2-Year-Old Colt and Gelding Pace (G1), with a full field of 10 lining up behind the gate. Beau Jangles, undefeated winner of the Metro Pace, was sent off as the 2-5 favorite over 7-2 second choice Brandon Blvd, winner of the Bluegrass Stakes, and 7-1 third choice Melillo, winner of the International Stallion Stakes. 29-1 Al Papi was quickest away through an opening quarter of 27 seconds before Beau Jangles took over down the backstretch through a half in 54 and 3/4 in 1:21 4/5. Turning for home Beau Jangles opened up a 1 1/2 length lead and held off Al Papi the rest of the way to win by a length in a new stakes, track, and Canadian record time of 1:48 3/5. It was another 1/2 length back to late-running Melillo third.

Left: Beau Jangles in the winner's circle. Winning trainer Dr. Ian Moore said, "I couldn't be happier. I mean, what a horse he is. It's just unbelievable to see him do that this late in the season. He's just unreal. He just impresses me every time I see him, every time I sit behind him. He's just an incredible animal, and we owe him a lot for this year. It's been a tremendous ride for all of us, and we hope to do it again next year, that's for sure."

Right: Beau Jangles heads back to the barn. Winning driver Bob McClure said, "I just wanted to keep him out of trouble, not get in a hurry. I knew they were going to race him hard, and they did, but I also didn't think there was much they could throw at him that he couldn't handle." Co-owner Jonathan Roberts added, "Halfway down the lane, I thought he was going to get it done. (But) after those types of fractions, and he was out to the second turn just about, that's tough on any horse. It takes a great horse to dig deep after that on a cold night like tonight and throw another :26 quarter at them at the end. It's just unbelievable."

Kicking off the 2025 Breeders Crown, the $700,000 2-Year-Old Filly Trot (G1) featured a full field of 10, with Big Apple Stakes winner Nezuko Kamado S sent off as the 6-5 favorite over 9-5 second choice Setyoursightshigh, winner of the Ohio Sires Stakes, and 5-1 third choice Storybook Love, second in both the Champlain at Mohawk and the Big Apple at Vernon Downs. 16-1 Bingo Night was quickest away through an opening quarter of 27 4/5 before Nezuko Kamado S took over through a half in 55 1/5 and 3/4 in 1:23 1/5 stalked by Setyoursightshigh. Nezuko Kamado S continued to lead to midstretch but Storybook Love, 6 lengths back early, rallied late to win by 1 3/4 lengths over Setyoursightshigh in 1:52 2/5. It was another 3/4 lengths back to favorite Nezuko Kamado S third.

Left: Storybook Love in the winner's circle. Winning trainer Matt Bax said, "I knew the filly was feeling great, but you need a lot of luck and a great drive to win this kind of race. You have to be on point on every aspect, and she came to play today. She's a special filly. You always dream and hope that you could be in this position, but to actually be here is pretty amazing. At Woodbine, 24 years ago, my father (John) was in this position with Duke Of York, and he had a great partner in Al Libfeld at that same time. So, I feel like it's a pretty special connection to also be on the same home soil and same owner, and, of course, having Brad along is great too. I feel very blessed."

Right: Third place finisher and beaten favorite Nezuko Kamado S in the post parade. The Marcus Melander trainee has a record of 6 wins, 1 second, and 0 third in 10 starts, earning $592,208 for owner Courant, Inc.

A full field of 10 contested the $600,000 2-Year-Old Filly Pace (G1), with She's a Great Lady Stakes winner Loua Dipa sent off as the 1-10 favorite over 7-1 Daya, second in the She's a Great Lady, and 9-1 I'm a Lou Lou, winner of the International Stallion Stakes at The Red Mile. 59-1 Hunting Memories went to the early lead through a quarter in 26 1/5 before driver Ronnie Wrenn Jr. sent Loua Dipa to a clear lead through a half in 54 3/5 and 3/4 in 1:21 4/5 pressed by Daya and stalked by Hunting Memories. Into the lane Loua Dipa opened up a 4 1/2 length lead and cruised to a 3 1/2 length win over late-running 55-1 She's a Bulldog in a new stakes, track, and Canadian record clocking of 1:49 1/5. It was another 1/4 length back to 49-1 Seaside Shuffle third.

Left: Loua Dipa in the winner's circle. Winning trainer Ron Burke said, "The truth is, she was just in the middle of the pack (of our 2-year-olds training down), until the first qualifier when she showed a hint of what she could do. Then every start after that, she just kept getting better, and when she came up here we were like, wow, she's special. And since then, she's just been on a tear."

Right: Loua Dipa in the post parade. Winning driver Ronnie Wrenn Jr. said, "She's really special. I'm just really happy to get the chance to sit behind her. These kinds of wins never get old, and hopefully it's not my last one."

The $700,000 2-Year-Old Colt and Gelding Trot (G1) featured a full field of 10 with peter Haughton Memorial and Mohawk Million winner Apex sent off as the 1-2 favorite over 4-1 second choice Diabolic Hill. 4th in the Mohawk Million, and 4.2-1 third choice Spencer Hanover, winner of the Big Apple Stakes. 17-1 Mr. Big Spender set the early pace of 28 4/5 and 57 4/5 while pressed by 113-1 Kingmen and stalked by Apex. On the far turn driver Dexter Dunn sent Apex to lead through 3/4 in 1:25 and continued to lead to mid stretch. Spencer Hanover, 4th early, came out for room and outfinished late-running Diabolic Hill to win by 3/4 length in 1:53 2/5. It was another 1/4 length back to Mr. Big Spender third, who nosed out Apex back in fourth.

Left: Spencer Hanover in the winner's circle. Winning driver Jason Bartlett said, "My colt was drifting out a little bit. I was just trying to maintain his lane as best possible. And thank God it's over with. I've got to thank Marcus [Melander] for putting me on this horse in New York and letting me drive him here. The horse is getting good at the right time, and in life, it's timing, it's great."

Right: Fourth place finisher and beaten favorite Apex warms up before the race. The Marcus Melander trainee has a record of 6 wins, 1 second, and 1 third in 9 starts, earning $1,248,065 for owners Jeffrey Snyder and Steve Stewart.

Left: Before the 4 Championship races on Friday, Woodbine Entertainment Group presented checks for the Breeders Crown Charity Challenge, won by Team George Millar and driver James MacDonald donating $95,000 to their chosen charity Food4Kids Halton. Each team pledges the minimum $12,500 to their chosen charity, and additional money can be won through the Driver Challenges, Owner Challenge, Charity Challenge, and donations from fans.
