The feature race at Woodbine on Sunday was the $100,000 Thorncliffe Stakes for older horses sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs on the Tapeta main track. Conditions were typical for early May in Toronto, with overcast skies and a race time temperature of 14.3 C (57.7 F). As expected, 2024 Canadian Horse of the Year and Champion Sprinter Patches O'Houlihan was sent off as the 1-2 favorite in the field of 6, off a close second in the Kennedy Road Stakes (G2) in November after winning the Vigil (G3) and Nearctic (G2). In to challenge him included 7-2 second choice Filo Di Arianna, the Champion Turf Horse and third in Horse of the Year voting, unraced since finishing second in the Woodbine Mile (G1) after winning the Highlander (G2) and King Edward (G2), and 11-2 third choice I'm a Gambler, 7th in the Nearctic before finishing 2024 with back to back allowance wins.

Left: Patches O'Houlihan in the winner's circle. Winning owner-breeder Frank Di Giulio Jr. said, "He looks fantastic, it's amazing. Hopefully, the Jacques Cartier (G3 on May 31 at Woodbine) is the obvious place (for his next start)."
Right: Patches O'Houlihan heads back to the barn after the race. Winning jockey Sofia Vives, the 2023 and 2024 Outstanding Apprentice, said, "We've kind of been a little unlucky the last couple times we rode him – we got all inside posts. But he shows he's pretty quick and he was quicker than the bunch today and he got there first.
Left: Patches O'Houlihan in the post parade before the race. Vives added, "He's always been a confident horse. He's always 110 percent and he knows when it's game time when he hears the gate."
Right: The trophy presentation with trainer Bob Tiller on the far right. Tiller said, "I have never been more confident in a horse in my life (today). He's trained better than he's ever trained and he's spectacular. I think he's a better horse this year. Hopefully, he stays sound."
Left: Second place finisher Filo Di Arianna returns after the race. The Mark Casse trainee improved his record to 9 wins, 5 seconds, and 1 third in 19 starts, earning $776,986 for owners Gary Barber, Wachtel Stable, and Peter Deutsch.
Right: Third place finisher I'm A Gambler heads out to the track before the race. The Kevin Attard trainee improved his record to 12 wins, 4 seconds, and 6 thirds in 41 starts, earning $449,272 for owner Red Baron's Barn.
