2025 Eclipse Stakes Day at Woodbine

There were four graded stakes contested at Woodbine Racetrack on Saturday afternoon. It was unusually chilly for the last day of May in Southern Ontario, with a daytime high of 13.5 C (56.3 F) under partly cloudy skies but with fields facing headwind gusts of 64 km/h (40 MPH) in the stretch. The E.P. Taylor turf course used for the Royal North Stakes was good-to-firm (GoingStick reading 10.3).

The headliner was the $175,000 bet365 Eclipse Stakes (G2) featuring some of the top older horses in Canada going 1 1/16 miles on the Tapeta. Get Smokin was sent off as the 5-2 favorite in the field of 8, making his first start of the year after winning the Valedictory Stakes (G3) in November. In to challenge him included 3-1 second choice Dataman off an allowance win after finishing 4th in the Sycamore (G3) in October, and 9-2 third choice Possiblemente, 5th in the Tampa Bay Stakes (G3) last out.

Jockey Sahin Civaci sent Get Smokin to the lead first time by and he set fractions of 24.04, 47.86, and 1:11.47 while pressed by Possiblemente and stalked by Dataman. Turning for home 9-1 Classic Mo Town, 6th early under Eswan Flores, found room to gain the lead at the 1/8 pole and held off late-running 6-1 Webslinger by 3/4 length in 1:42.97. It was another 2 1/4 lengths back to pacesetting favorite Get Smokin third.

Ms. Tart wins the Royal North Stakes (G3)
The first turf stakes of the Woodbine meeting is the $150,000 HPIbet Royal North Stakes (G3) for older fillies and mares sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs on the E.P. Taylor turf course. Earhart was sent off as the 9-10 favorite in the field of 10 off her 5 1/2 length romp in the Whimsical Stakes (G3). In to challenge her included 5-2 second choice Toupie, 4th in the Giants Causeway (G3) at Keeneland after winning the Las Cienegas (G3) at Santa Anita, and 17-2 third choice Gal in a Rush, second in the Whimsical after finishing 9th in the Bessarabian (G3).

Jockey Manny Franco sent Toupie to the lead and she set fractions of 22.1 and 44.49 while pressed by 15-1 Dancing Duchess and stalked by Earhart. Turning for home, the pacesetters tired as 13-1 Ready to Jam, 6th early, came out 5 wide and swept to the lead through 3/4 in 1:08.87. 70-1 longest shot Ms. Tart, last early under Huber Villa-Gomez, fanned out 9 wide into the stretch and rallied to win by 1/2 a length over Ready to Jam in 1:15.56. It was another 1/2 length back to 39-1 Ticker Tape Home third, while favorite Earhart finished last beaten 9 1/4 lengths.

It was exciting watching because going to the gate, we were 70-1. It was a full field, trying the turf here. It's just amazing. I hauled her up here myself today. She's been a really classy filly. I didn't have to do anything special with her, just keep her happy and bring her over here."

Old Chestnut wins the Jacques Cartier Stakes (G3)

Kicking off the Saturday card of racing was the $135,000 Jacques Cartier Stakes (G3) for older horses sprinting 6 furlongs on Tapeta. After 1-9 morning line favorite and 2024 Horse of the Year Patches O'Houlihan was scratched by trainer Bob Tiller due to a fever, just 3 horses went to post with Simcoe sent off as the 1-2 favorite off a 2 race win streak in allowance company. Okiro was the 2-1 second choice off 6th place finishes in the Gulfstream Park Sprint and an allowance at Keeneland, with 7-2 Old Chestnut completing the field, 4th in an allowance last out.

Jockey Eswan Flores sent Old Chestnut to the lead out of the chute and he set fractions of 22.40 and 44.13 while a length ahead of Simcoe who was 2 lengths ahead of Okiro. Turning for home Old Chestnut left the other two behind, opening a 2 1/2 length lead through 5f in 55.62 and finishing up 2 3/4 lengths in front of Simcoe in 1:08.17, just 0.54 second off the track record. It was another 3 3/4 lengths back to Okiro last.

Caitlinhergrtness wins the Belle Mahone Stakes (G3)

Closing out the stakes action was the $150,000 Belle Mahone Stakes (G3) featuring a field of 8 older fillies and mares going 1 1/16 miles on the Tapeta main track. 2-2024 champion 3-year-old filly and King's Plate winner Caitlinhergrtness was sent off as the 2-1 favorite off a 4th place finish in the Maple Leaf (G3) after finishing third in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1) at Keeneland. In to challenge her included 3-1 second choice and 2024 champion older female and last year's winner Fashionably Fab off her win in the La Prevoyante Stakes, and 7-2 third choice Literate off a 6th place finish in the La Troienne (G1) at Churchill Downs.

Jockey Manny Franco sent 11-1 For Flying to the lead first time by through fractions of 24.17, 47.56, and 1:11.74 while pressed by 4-1 fourth choice Dana's Beauty and stalked by Caitlinhergrtness. Into the stretch Dana's Beauty tired as Caitlinhergrtness split horses to lead through 1 mile in 1:35.76. Kept to task by Rafael Hernandez, Caitlinhergrtness drew off to win by 5 lengths over For Flying in 1:42.26. It was a neck back to 14-1 Ready for Shirl third.
