But he got her to settle and she was going so easy. Then I saw the :49. We thought maybe one of Phil D'Amato's would go and we'd kind of slip in behind that. But when you've got one of the leading jockeys on her and they're riding like he is right now you just leave it up to him."

And I was like 'She's gonna break sharp' and she did. You know, I was just galloping with her. It was her first time being on the lead, but she loved it. She was strong. I just feel she was really happy and I just let her be. I was waiting for the quarter pole. She took off again around the quarter pole. And you know, that was it. She was fire to the wire".

Left: Desert Gate in the winner's circle. Winning trainer Bob Baffert said, "It's nice to see these horses develop like this. He's been kind of quiet down here but he broke well and that's the most important part of these 2-year-old races is that they come out clean. This horse is very professional since day one. It's nice to have these horses. That's what we're in the business for. We just got to keep him healthy and sound."

Right: Desert Gate returns after the race. Winning jockey Juan Hernandez said, "This horse is usually pretty quiet. But today he was on it. He was feeling good in the paddock. He came away from there good and he was running comfortably all the way. At the 3/8 he wanted to go, but I got him to wait. Then we took off in the stretch and he was the best."
