Glorious Forever wins the 2018 Longines Hong Kong Cup.
Date: 12/05/2019

The last big event of the year on the international horse racing calendar is the Longines Hong Kong International Races, billed as the Turf World Championships. The four Group 1 events will be contested over the right-handed 1 3/16 mile turf course at Sha Tin on Sunday afternoon (late Saturday night/early Sunday morning in America), all of which are under weight-for-age conditions. North American racing fans can watch and wager on the full card of 10 races through TVG in the USA, HPI-TV in Canada and at selected simulcast locations, with the first race going to post at noon local time (11:00PM ET).

The Longines Hong Kong Vase (G1) will kick off the day's stakes action at 1:40PM local time (12:40AM ET), carded as race 4. The race drew a full field of 14 and will be run over the classic distance of 2400 meters (about 1 1/2 miles) around 2 turns. Defending champion Exultant is back and should be favored off wins in the Champions and Chater Cup (G1) and the Jockey Club Cup (G2). Regular rider Zac Purton gets the call for trainer Tony Cruz. Epsom Derby (G1) winner Anthony Van Dyck represents Ireland off 3rd place finishes in the Irish Champion (G1) and the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1). Ryan Moore rides for trainer Aidan O'Brien.

The Longines Hong Kong Sprint (G1), race 5, is the next race at a distance of 1200 meters (about 6 furlongs) around one turn, and a full field of 14 goes to post at 2:20PM (1:20AM ET). Mr Stunning is looking for the three-peat off a disappointing 8th place finish in the Jockey Club Sprint (G2), the main local prep. Hugh Bowman gets the call for trainer Frankie Lor. Japanese invader Danon Smash tries to beat the locals, off a 3rd place finish in the Sprinters Stakes (G1) at Nakayama after winning the Keeneland Cup (G3) at Sapporo. New rider Frankie Dettori will be in the irons for trainer Takayuki Yasuda.

Race 7, the Longines Hong Kong Mile (G1) drew a field of 10 and will run at 3:30PM (2:30AM ET), at 1600 meters (about 1 mile) around one turn. Two time winner Beauty Generation is back and should be favored, drawing post 5 with regular rider Zac Purton getting the call for trainer John Moore. After winning the Champions Mile (G1) and Celebration Cup (G3) he finished 3rd in his last 2 starts, the Sha Tin Trophy and the Jockey Club Mile. Indy Champ is in from Japan looking for the upset off his Mile Championship (G1) win at Kyoto. New jockey Damian Lane rides for trainer Hidetaka Otonashi.

The highlight race of the day is the Longines Hong Kong Cup (G1), a 2000-meter (about 1 1/4 mile) trip around two turns, where a field of 8 will go to post at 4:10PM (3:10AM ET) as race 8. Defending champion Glorious Forever is back, with Zac Purton drawing post 5 for trainer Frankie Lor. However he finished 9th in his last 2 starts, the Sha Tin Trophy and the Jockey Club Cup (G2). Aidan O'Brien brings in Magic Wand off her win in the Mackinnon Stakes (G1) at Flemington just 4 days after she finished 10th in the Melbourne Cup (G1). Regular rider Ryan Moore rides from post 7. Alain de Royer-Dupre trainee Edisa, winner of the Jockey Club Oaks Invitational (G1) at Belmont Park, comes here off a close second in the Prix de Conseil de Paris (G2) at Longchamp. Stephane Pasquier rides from post 4.

Past performances are available for all the races in PDF format in their form guide. These are not traditional North American type past performances, but they are self-explanatory. Note that program numbers do not correspond with post positions. Lots of other info like past winners and photos is also provided in the form guide.
