Swiss Skydiver passes in front of the Kentucky Oaks Sign on Saturday morning
Date: 08/29/2020

Saturday morning, a week before the rescheduled and spectator-free Kentucky Derby Day, was overcast with temperatures in the mid 70's during training at Churchill Downs and the track was rated "good" after intermittent rain Friday evening and overnight. Many of the Kentucky Derby and Oaks horses came out for their special private workout session at 7:30 after the break, although a few had come out earlier in the day. Below are photos for 3 Derby horses and 1 Oaks filly from this morning on the track with comments for each. You can watch video of today's training session here.

The Kentucky Derby post postion draw will be on Tuesday.

Kentucky Derby

horse racingAttachment Rate runner-up in the Ellis Park Derby galloped 1 1/2 miles under exercise rider Faustino Herrarte at 7:30. He is scheduled to work out on Sunday morning.

horse racingEnforceable worked half a mile in 49.60 seconds under jockey Adam Beschizza, with fractins of 12.80, 24.80, 37.20, and out 5f in 1:03.20. Beschizza said of his first Derby mount, “I thought the work was perfect. He went a scratch under :50. Mark and (assistant) David (Carroll) just wanted to keep the lid on it. His major work was in the bag. I like his consistency. He is a lightframed horse and doesn’t need a lot to keep fit. He is going to have to be on his ‘A’ game. He needs pace and we know he is going to get it (in the Derby).” Trainer Mark Casse added, “He’s maturing; he’s ready to go. I thought he looked super. If you said to me three months ago you could have him where he is today and you’d be in the position you’re in, I would have taken it. Where he fits in (the Derby field) will depend a lot on who gets lucky, who doesn’t. And pace."

horse racinghorse racingKing Guillermo worked an easy 1/2 mile in 52.20 under exercise rider Edgar Garcia, through fractions of 14.40, 27.20, and out 5f in 1:05.20. Garcia said, “(Trainer Juan Avila) asked me to go easy and it was exactly what the horse needed. I thought he galloped out around the turn well and was moving very easy on the track. He doesn’t need to do much, he’s pretty fit.”

Kentucky Oaks

horse racinghorse racingSwiss Skydiver worked an easy 1/2 mile in 49.20 under jockey Brian Hernandez Jr, through fractions of 12.00 and 23.80, out 5f in 1:02.20. Trainer Ken McPeek said, “We went to the frontside (to watch). It was just a happy half-mile, just something to stretch her legs a little bit. Uncomplicated. Brian knows her well. It was nice of him to come by and get on her. All systems go.” Tyler Gaffalione will be in the irons Friday.
