The 2011 Breeders' Cup World Championships ended on Saturday with 9 races all with year-end championship implications. The weather was excellent with temperatures in the 60's, sunny skies and minimal wind for participants and the 65,143 in attendance. The Matt Winn Turf Course was rated good, while the main track was good initially but upgraded to fast in time for the Sprint. Churchill Downs played the role of the "graveyard of favorites" as only one favorite was able to win over the 9 Championship races.

Full results with several photos are available for each race at the link below the pay-off chart.

Friday's results and photos are available here.

Drosselmeyer wins the Classic over Game Over Dude

The $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) features the best older horses going 1 1/4 miles on the main track. Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) winner Flat Out was sent off as the 7-2 favorite in the field of 12 over 4-1 Havre de Grace and 5-1 So You Think. 14-1 Game On Dude went to the lead first time past the stands and set fractions of 23.61, 47.84, and 1:12,82 while stalked by 11-2 fourth choice Uncle Mo. Turning for home, Game On Dude continued to lead through 1 mile in 1:38.27. 15-1 Drosselmeyer, 9th early, came out wide and closed down the center of the track to win by 1 1/2 length in 2:04.27. It was another length back to 17-1 Ruler on Ice, while favorite Flat Out was fifth.

Winning trainer Bill Mott said, "He ran a super race. He was mowing them down the last 1/8 mile. I guess his biggest attribute is his stamina, and he showed it today. When they were wearing down, he was coming. It’s great. Maybe they’ll want to run him another year." Jockey Mike Smith added, "He ran an awesome race right from the first jump.  Right out of the gate, he got into a great rhythm. The key to this horse is to keep him moving. If you put on the breaks it messes him up. I knew I was going to wheel out, so I just kept him going. And I was able to save ground on both turns."

Court Vision (inside) wins the Mile over Turallure

The $2 million TVG Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) is for older horses going 1 mile on the turf. Goldikova was going for an unprecedented fourth straight win in this race, and was the 6-5 favorite in the field of 13 over 11-2 Gio Ponti and 7-1 Strong Suit. 27-1 Jeranimo and 30-1 Get Stormy dueled for the early lead through fractions of 24.17 and 48.18 with 26-1 Sidney's Candy stalking the lead pair third. Sidney's Candy took over the lead at the top of the lane through 3/4 i 1:12.44, but the fast pace set up a rush of closers to the line. Goldikova found room and gained the lead at the 1/8 pole through 7f in 1:24.74, but 65-1 longest shot Court Vision, 12th early, and 11-1 Turallure, last early, passed her in the final 1/16 and hit the line together. The photo determined Court Vision prevailed by a nose in 1:37.05. It was just a length back from Turallure to Goldikova third. Pat Valenzuela aboard last place finisher Courageous Cat claimed foul against Olivier Peslier aboard Goldikova but the claim was disallowed by the stewards.

Trainer Dale Romans said, "I’ve been saying all week how good this horse was doing.  When I saw how easy he was running down the backside, I thought if they just back up a little we’ve got a hell of a shot. It’s just been an incredible year. All my best horses have been running well." Jockey Robby Albarado added, "I was far back early but I knew they were going quick and I figured that gave me a chance.  Dale told me to be sure to keep him running at the end.  I worked him the other day on the grass and I just loved what he did. It just felt great for me (winning at my home track) but it’s great for Dale too – him being a homeboy."

St Nicholas Abbey wins the Turf

The $3 million Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) features older horses going 1 1/2 miles on the turf. Grand Prix de Saint Cloud (G1) and Prix Foy (G1) winner Sarafina was sent off as the 2-1 favorite over 3-1 Sea Moon and 5-1 Midday. 6-1 Await the Dawn set easy fractions of 24.92, 50.09, 1:14.67, and 1:39.93 over the good turf while stalked by 9-1 Dean's Kitten for the first lap of the course. Entering the stretch, 14-1 Brilliant Speed gained the front through 10f in 2:05.34 and led to mid-stretch, but St Nicholas Abbey, 7th at the top of the lane, came out for room and rallied to win by 2 1/4 lengths over Sea Moon in 2:28.85. It was another length back to Brilliant Speed third while favorite Sarafina was fourth.

Winning trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "This is very special.  Unbelievable.  It was a wonderful race.  He is an amazing rider. It’s been a great day. It’s been a great day. Thank you very much." Jockey Joseph O'Brien, son of Aidan added, "It’s a dream come true. I rode him twice before and this is my first time winning on him. He relaxed lovely. We had a nice pace and he picked up where it mattered. It wasn’t a mad pace and he was comfortable and relaxed great. I think he was a little better going left-handed here than right-handed in the Arc. He traveled well today and looked great and picked up great."

Caleb's Posse wins the Dirt Mile

The $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) is for older horses going 1 mile on the main track. Smarty Jones Stakes and Indiana Derby (G2) winner Wilburn was sent off as the 5-2 favorite in the field of 9 over 3-1 Trappe Shot and 5-1 Shackleford. 7-1 The Factor took over the lead exiting the chute and he set fractions of 22.49 and 45.36 while stalked by Shackleford. On the turn, Shackleford took over the lead through 3/4 in 1:09.52, and opened up a 2 1/2 length advantage at the 1/8 pole through 7f in 1:21.95. 7-1 Caleb's Posse, 8th early, closed on the far outside to win going away by 4 lengths in 1:34.59. It was another 1 3/4 lengths to 30-1 Tres Borrachos third, while favorite Wilburn was 7th.

Winning trainer Donnie Von Hemel said, "You could see coming down the stretch that he had dead aim on the leader. The last 1/16 mile, we just got to celebrate. I think we got enough pace in the race, and he was just rolling down the lane. I was hoping for 45 and change, so I think that was key. I think you can probably make a case for champion sprinter this year. I look at this one-turn mile as a sprint." Jockey Rajiv Maragh added, "The trip was perfect; just what we hoped for. And when it came time for him, he fired really big. We’ve had luck taking this horse back and making one late run with him, so you stick with what’s successful. To win a race of this magnitude is special, really special."

Hansen wins the Juvenile

The $2 million Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) features 2-year-old colts and geldings going 1 1/16 miles on the main track. Saratoga Special (G2) and Champagne (G1) winner Union Rags was sent off as the 11-10 favorite in the field of 13 over 6-1 Creative Cause and 7-1 Hansen. Jockey Ramon Dominguez sent Hansen to the lead immediately and he set fractions of 23.26, 47.39, and 1:12.24 while 42-1 Speightscity stalked him 1 1/2 lengths behind. Entering the stretch, Union Rags, 6th early, closed on the pacesetter but Hansen dug in late to hold him off by a head in 1:44.44. It was another length back to Creative Cause third.

Winning trainer Mike Maker said, "He’s a natural. Obviously his performance speaks for itself. That’s the way he wants to run and we weren’t going to change a thing. It’s just that natural ability. Obviously he’s got a lot of speed and he’s always shown it. He’s also got a lot of fight; a bunch of good characteristics. We pointed to the Breeders’ Cup before he ever ran. I only told that to the owners, and they’re as crazy as I am." Jockey Ramon Dominguez added, "He ran superb for me. Going into the first turn, he was a little aggressive. That made me a little concerned. When we got to the backside, he switched to his right (lead) and he came back to me and relaxed beautiful. I got pressed pretty early, around the 3/8 pole, but he continued coming for me. I'm very pleased. He’s special."

Amazombie wins the Sprint

The $1.5 million Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) is for top older sprinters going 6 furlongs. Forego (G1) winner Jackson Bend was sent off as the 5-2 favorite in the field of 9 over 7-2 Big Drama and 5-1 Euroears. Euroears was gunned to the lead soon after the start and got a fast opening quarter of 21.12 before 7-1 Force Freeze passed him and opened a 1 1/2 length advantage through a half in 44.41. Force Freeze led through the lane but 8-1 Amazombie, 5th early, closed late and outfinished Force Freeze through the final 1/16 to win by a neck in 1:09.17. It was another 2 1/4 lengths back to Jackson Bend third.

Winning jockey Mike Smith said, "He always gets out of the gate good and has speed to get good position. Today, he broke sharp and we got the lead and kept going. He did everything on his own to the stretch. When the rest started coming to me, he just pushed harder and won." Trainer Bill Spawr added, "I feel very fortunate and very lucky. After he won the Ancient Title (at Santa Anita), we decided to send him here. That’s a ‘Win and You’re In’ race, and if it weren’t for the Ancient Title, we wouldn’t be here. There are no words to describe the feeling (winning first Breeders’ Cup race)."

Jockey Cornelio Velasquez added, "I rode this horse in the Travers (4th in 2010), and he has one pace all the way. I stayed behind the speed, and at the 1/4 pole, put him in the clear. And I had a lot of horse. I like this horse. He needs a strong ride. In the last 5/16 I had a lot of horse. (Joel Rosario on Pleasant Prince) sent his horse at the 1/4 pole. At the 3/8 I pulled the trigger."
