The $5 million DP World Dubai Turf (G1) is an 1800-meter (about 1 1/8 mile) trip around one turn of the turf course at Meydan Racecourse and is a Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" qualifier in the Mile division. A field of 11 older horses went to post, with Juddmonte International (G1) Ombudsman sent off as the 2-5 favorite after his second place finish in the Qipco Champions Stakes (G1). In to challenge him included 5-1 second choice Gaia Force, second in the Mile Championship (G1), and 9-1 third choice Quddwah, winner of the Singspiel Stakes (G2).

Jockey Ryusei Sakai sent Gaia Force to the lead out of the chute while pressed by Elnajmm and stalked by Quddwah. Turning for home Gaia Force tired as Quddwah briefly led at the 3/16 before Ombudsman, midpack early under William Buick, rallied by to win by 2 lengths in 1:47.46. It was a head back to late-running Andreas Vesalius third.

Ombudsman heads to the winner's enclosure. Winning trainer John Gosden said, "It's a great sense of relief. It's not easy coming out of a winter in England, bringing a horse in ready to run. I think he'll come on for the race, he was probably coming in here at 90 per cent but it was enough to get the job done. I thought William was wise, he said I'll give the ground away, go wide, lose the ground there but I want a clear run in the straight. Absolutely thrilled with him."

The trophy presentation for the Dubai Turf. Winning jockey William Buick said, "Congratulations Dubai. We have some beautiful racing, it's a pleasure to be part of and Ombudsman showed there, first run of the year, what he can do. It was how we hoped it would happen, very smooth and, look, he's going to have a very exciting year ahead. It's an honour for me to ride for Godolphin and His Highness. Dubai World Cup night is the biggest night in horse racing so to represent His Highness on his best horses and to have winners is a dream come true."

Left: Second place finisher Quddwah heads out to the track before the race. Trainer Ed Crisford said, "This sort of style of racing he really enjoys, being tucked in and not an end-to-end gallop. He had a dream run up the rail, finished well and Ombudsman is obviously a fantastic horse as he showed last year. He's a nice horse that can be winning some good races. I think he can win a Group 1 – he's been knocking on the door. He just needs the right sort of track and the right style of racing and I think he can do it."

Right: Third place finisher Andreas Vesalius heads out to the track.
