Workout Photos

Date: 12/09/2015

The Longines Hong Kong International Races will be run this Sunday afternoon at Sha Tin Racecourse. As usual, horses from Europe, Asia, and Australia ship in for the four Group 1 races, billed as the Turf World Championships, with the HK$25 million (about US$3.2 million) Hong Kong Cup the highlight of the afternoon, contested at 2000 meters (about 1 1/4 miles). Conditions were less than ideal, with rain and temperatures in the 60's.

Here are photos for 15 of the international horses out on on the track at Sha Tin on Wednesday morning. Click the small photo to see a larger version.

Criterion (Cup) schooled in the paddock then worked 6 furlongs on turf in 1:22.30 under jockey Craig Williams. Williams said, "Very happy with him, especially as he was so relaxed compared to the last time he was here in April. He quickened up nicely over the last 200m and he recovered in 30 seconds. Couldn't be happier with him."

Danon Platina (Mile) cantered 1 1/4 miles on the turf then schooled in the paddock under exercise rider Tohio Fujii. Fujii said, "He worked on turf for the first time here but settled in well. He was a bit tense yesterday but seemed to be more relaxed this morning. He walked around the parade ring nicely this morning and will gallop on turf tomorrow."
horse racing
Dariyan (Vase) cantered 1 mile on the Polytrack then worked 6f on turf in 1:21.90. Trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre said, "The horse seems to be in good form, and he is looking well. Whether he is good enough I don't know, but we'll find out on Sunday. His run behind New Bay at Deauville in August was a good effort, and we gave him time after that. He's developed and matured since then, and this will be good experience for him. He'll be a nice four-year-old next year."
horse racing
Fiero (Mile) worked 5 furlongs on turf in 51.80 seconds then schooled in the paddock. Kazuo Fujiwara, assistant to trainer Hideaki Fujiwara said, "This is his second time in Hong Kong, so he has settled in well and is relaxed compared to last time he came here. He has had only four starts this season but everything has gone as planned for this coming Sunday. This year's Hong Kong Mile has a strong field to beat, but he has maintained good condition and he is ready to compete well. Today we gave him a breeze on turf and it was just to get a feel of the track."
horse racing
Gailo Chop (Cup) worked 6 furlongs on turf in 1:15.30. Trainer Antoine de Watrigant said, "His skin is in good condition and his weight is right. He worked well today but he needed it and had a good blow afterwards. He is a horse who tends to pull himself up when he's done enough so I told Steve Haes to push him out. We'll now have to see how he has come out of that workout."
horse racing
Highland Reel (Vase) galloped 1/2 a mile in 56.20 seconds under jockey David Hannigan. Hannigan said, "All good. He's a happy horse."
horse racing
Lucia Valentina (Cup) schooled in the paddock then worked 6 furlongs in 1:21.00. Trainer Kris Lees said, "I was very pleased with her work this morning. She has eaten up well since she arrived and she's in good order. We understand she has a tough assignment on Sunday but this race has been in the back of my mind for some time and she was back in form last start. This is obviously a rise in class on that win but she was wide that day, carried a big weight and returned the best closing sectionals of any horse in races at a mile or further on the day. A shower or two of rain would be a bonus for her."
horse racing
Ming Dynasty (Vase) cantered once around the turf then blew out through the 1/4 mile stretch in 30.20 seconds. Trainer Mikel Delzangles said, "Everything has gone well with the horse's travel out here and it was important to find out how he took to travelling. I'm happy with the horse but this will be competitive. It will be good experience and he will be a nice four-year-old, maybe for Dubai next year."
horse racing
Nuovo Record (Cup) schooled in the paddock and cantered about 1 1/2 miles on the turf. Exercise rider Kazuyoshi Aita said, "The track was not as wet as we expected with this rain. She was not shying in the parade ring. She is full of energy and we will gallop her on turf tomorrow."
horse racing
Preferment (Vase) jogged over Polytrack on Wednesday morning under Joanne Taylor, assistant to trainer Chris Waller. Taylor said, "All good, a nice easy morning for him after yesterday's gallop. Very happy."
horse racing
Red Dubawi (Mile) worked 1/2 a mile on turf in 55.70 seconds under regular jockey Andreas Suborics, who said, "He feels good. He's travelled well and his work was as good this morning as you would hope for." Trainer Erika Mader added, "All is fine with him, he's eating and drinking well and he had a good gallop this morning - running home strongly his last 400 metres. He was keen to run. We are happy with him but we would like some more rain and the ground to be much softer than it is."
horse racing
Sakura Gospel (Sprint) galloped 1 1/2 miles on turf and schooled in the paddock. Assistant trainer Isao Futaguchi said, "I worked him on turf to get the feel of the surface and it seems ok to me, but he was shying a bit. He looks well. It was good for him to get acquainted with the turf course before he breezes tomorrow."
horse racing
Satono Aladdin (Cup) cantered 1 1/4 mles on the turf. Exercise rider Mitsuharu Morisawa said: "He is full of beans. He moved nicely on the turf and seemed to cope with the surface. He is eating up and is settling in well. He will gallop on turf tomorrow."
horse racing
Staphanos (Cup) worked 1/2 a mile on turf in 52.80 seconds then schooled in the paddock under regular rider Keita Tosaki. Tosaki said, "We had a nice gallop on turf this morning. I had an impression that the grass surface seems to be something between the Japanese turf and a Bermuda grass type of turf. He handled the surface well and moved nicely. There is no concern about him." Kazuo Fujiwara, assistant to trainer Hideaki Fujiwara added, "We worked him to give him strength and loosen him up in his gallop, and to let him grab the surface to get a feel of the turf, so a fast time was not our concern today. I am very happy with his condition. He is looking well."
horse racing
Toormore (Mile) cantered 1 mile on turf under exercise rider Dave Thomas. Tony Gorman, assistant to trainer Richard Hannon said, "He's great, super. He's putting back on the weight that he lost on the journey and it's all systems go. The boss will be here tomorrow."
