On Monday afternoon, final entries were taken and post positions were drawn for the 150th running of the $2 million Preakness Stakes (G1), the second jewel of the Triple Crown to be run on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course over 1 3/16 miles. Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Sovereignty is skipping the Preakness (so there will be no Triple Crown winner this year), but second place finisher and Derby favorite Journalism will be there and once again the favorite. The San Felipe (G2) and Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner drew post 2 as the 8-5 morning line favorite for trainer Mike McCarthy, with regular rider Umberto Rispoli retaining the mount. In to challenge him include 4-1 second choice Sandman, winner of the Arkansas Derby (G1) before disappointing 7th in the Derby. New rider John Velazquez will be in the irons for trainer Mark Casse from post 7. The 9-2 third choice is new shooter River Thames, a close second in the Fountain of Youth (G2) before finishing third in the Blue Grass (G1). Irad Ortiz Jr. gets the call from post 6 for trainer Todd Pletcher. The 5-1 fourth choice is another new shooter, Clever Again from post 8 for trainer Steve Asmussen, unraced since his win in the Hot Springs Stakes at Oaklawn on March 30. Regular jockey Jose Ortiz rides again Saturday.

It will be a full house again this year with all the usual concerts and events. Pimlico was supposed to be torn down a year ago so a new grandstand and track surfaces could be built, but that hasn't happened yet, so it will be the same old venue as in the past. As has been in the case since 2019, the north end grandstand at the top of the stretch remains vacant as it has been deemed unsafe for use, with large tarps covering the seating areas. After racing ends, the Maryland State Archives will remove artifacts including historic documents and seven 50-year-old murals (which are currently above the betting windows on the 3rd floor), with the actual demolition of the building starting 6 weeks later. The Preakness will be run at Laurel Park in 2026, with the race returning to the rebuilt Pimlico in 2027.

The Preakness undercard will be broadcast on CNBC and Peacock from 2:00-4:00pm ET with the NBC main network carrying the Preakness and the 3 stakes before it (Sir Barton, James W. Murphy, and Dinner Party Stakes) from 4:00-7:30. Free past performances are available from BRISnet.com here (look for Goal Oriented).
