2025 Kentucky Derby Entries

All the prep races are over now and the entries have been drawn for the 151st Kentucky Derby (G1) presented by Woodford Reserve on Saturday May 3. A field of 21 was entered for this $5 million classic with 20 starters and one also-eligible. Journalism is the 3-1 morning line favorite drawing post 8 off a 4 race winning streak including the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2), San Felipe Stakes (G2), and Santa Anita Derby (G1). Regular rider Umberto Rispoli will be in the irons for trainer Mike McCarthy. In to challenge him include 5-1 second choice Sovereignty out of post 18 for trainer Bill Mott. He won the Street Sense (G3) at Churchill Downs and Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream 
Park before finishing second in the Florida Derby (G1). Manny Franco gets the call on Saturday. Sandman is the 6-1 third choice, drawing the unlucky post 17 for trainer Mark Casse and jockey Jose Ortiz. After finishing second in the Southwest and third in the Rebel (G2), he won the Arkansas Derby (G1).
After drawing post 8 for Journalism, trainer McCarthy said, "I have so much confidence in this horse I probably would have been happy with wherever he drew," McCarthy said afterward. "But there's plenty of speed inside of us. My horse is very tactical, he's fast enough in his own right. He'll bounce out of there, and I'm sure he'll find himself in a very comfortable spot."0
It is worth noting that champion juvenile and Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Citizen Bull drew the rail for jockey Martin Garcia and is dismissed at 20-1 after a disappointing 4th in the Santa Anita Derby. Trainer Bob Baffert, returning to the Derby after serving a 3 year suspension, said, "He's definitely not taking back now. You don't want to be in the one hole because you're in the gate a long time."
