Trainer Todd Pletcher with Always Dreaming during the walkover from the barns before the Derby |
Always Dreaming was lightly raced as a 2-year-old, with only two starts in July and August. He finished second in both in maiden special weight company at Belmont Park and Saratoga. He made his 2017 debut winning a maiden race at Tampa Bay Downs in Janyart then won an allowance at Gulfstream Park in March. He made his final prep winning the Florida Derby (G1) and trained up to the Kentucky Derby. Sent off as the 9-2 favorite from post 5, he won the Kentucky Derby (G1) by 2 3/4 lengths with John Velazquez aboard for trainer Todd Pletcher and owners MeB Racing, Brooklyn Boyz, Teresa Viola, St Elias, Siena Farm and West Point Thoroughbreds. He will be sent to Pimlico right away so he can become acclimated to the track there before the Preakness.
Always Dreaming schooling in the paddock on Wednesday afternoon before the Derby. He never came out during the Derby workout session at 8:30am, coming out very early instead, so I never got to see him in the morning. | |
