2009 Belmont Entries

Date: 06/03/2009

Results are here!

A field of ten will face the starter in the 141st running of the $1 million Belmont Stakes (G1) on Saturday June 6, the final leg of the Triple Crown. Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, who followed up that effort with a runner-up finish in the Preakness Stakes, drew post 7 and is the 2-1 favorite on the morning line with jockey Calvin Borel back aboard. In to challenge the son of 2004 Belmont winner Birdstone include 3-1 Charitable Man and jockey Alan Garcia in post 6, winner of the Peter Pan Stakes, and 4-1 third choice from post 2 Dunkirk with jockey John Velazquez, 11th in the Kentucky Derby last time out.

Chip Woolley, trainer of Mine That Bird said at the draw, "The No. 7 is fine with me. My horse is going to back out of it anyway, so it's not going to be a factor. If you watch Mine That Bird run, his stride is bigger than most horses. He has a huge stride and gets over the ground real easy. With his running style, we're going to have to let him run his race. But the good thing here is, when you start slowing the fractions down, if you let him run his same race, he's going to move way up. If we can just be within 10 to 12 of them, I'm confident he'll have enough kick left."

Kiaran McLaughlin, trainer of Charitable Man said, "Our horse couldn't be doing any better. We're very excited. Charitable Man should be on or near the lead. We'll let Alan (Garcia) decide where he's going to lay early. He's a young jockey with a lot of success. I like the fact he won the Met Mile and the Vagrancy and went to Canada and won a $300,000 race for Christophe Clement (the Nassau aboard Rutherienne). His confidence level is high, and he won the Belmont last year (on Da'Tara)."

Post time for the Belmont Stakes will be 6:27pm Eastern and it will be race 11 of 13 on the card. ESPN will televise the undercard from noon to 5pm with ABC taking over from 5pm to 7pm.
