Accelerate wins the Classic

The $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) features the best older horses going 1 1/4 miles on the main track. Pacific Classic (G1) and Awesome Again (G1) winner Accelerate was sent off as the 5-2 favorite in the full field of 14 over 4-1 McKinzie and 5-1 Catholic Boy. 13-1 Mendelssohn set the pace of 22.68, 46.46, 1:10.61, and 1:35.90 while pressed by McKinzie and stalked by 13-2 West Coast. Accelerate, 5th early under Joel Rosario, came out 4 wide to take over the lead at the 3/16 pole, and held off late-running 30-1 Gunnevera by a length in 2:02.93. It was another 3/4 length back to 14-1 Thunder Snow third.

Winning trainer John Sadler, celebrating his first Breeders' Cup win, said, "It's obviously a point of contention for me, but we got the big one. He ran a great race and Joel (Rosario) rode him perfectly. We were really thrilled. He did such a good job, kept him clear. We thought that post might be a bonus on the outside. He never got in trouble and never had anything in front of him. He just stayed a little wide and won the race."

Enable wins the Turf

The $4 million Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) features older horses going 1 1/2 miles on the turf. Two-time Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) winner Enable was sent off as the 4-5 favorite in the field of 13 over 5-1 Waldgeist and 15-2 Channel Maker. 13-1 Glorious Empire set the pace of 24.65, 49.11, 1:14.22, and 1:40.55 while pressed by Channel Maker and stalked by 42-1 Hi Happy. 10-1 Magical was sent to lead by jockey Ryan Moore on the far turn through 10f in 2:07.55, but Enable, wide throughout, came out to the center of the course to take over the lead at the 1/8 pole. Enable pulled away late to win by 3/4 length in 2:32.65. It was a long 9 lengths back to late-running 37-1 Sadler's Joy third.

Winning jockey Frankie Dettori said, "I was a bit further back than I wanted to be. But from the bend to the back straight, I was four-wide. I felt that the ground was much worse on the inside. I didn't have the novelty to be wide with the draw. I was drawn two, and she didn't break that well. We were going pretty fast for 1 1/2 miles on soft ground. Then I knew that pace couldn't keep up. So then I was just waiting for her to give me the message she was ready to go."

Monomoy Girl wins the Distaff

Returning to its original home on Saturday's card, the $2 million Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) featured a field of 11 older fillies and mares going 1 1/8 miles on the main track. Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) winner and Cotillion (G1) runne-up (by DQ) Monomoy Girl was the 9-5 favorite over 9-4 Abel Tasman and 6-1 Midnight Bisou. 19-1 Wonder Gadot set the pace of 23.39, 47.57, and 1:12.11 while pressed by Monomoy Girl and stalked by Abel Tasman. Turning for home Wonder Gadot tired allowing Monomoy Girl to lead through 1 mile in 1:36.67. Kept to task by jockey Florent Geroux, Monomoy Girl held off late-running 13-2 fourth choice Wow Cat by a length in 1:49.79. It was another 1/2 length back to Midnight Bisou third.

Winning trainer Brad Cox, celebrating his first Breeders' Cup winner said, "She ran the way she was training. She was training like a monster and she ran like a monster. She is a special filly, one of a kind, an unbelievable filly." Jockey Florent Geroux added, "She was super-sharp. I was able to lay second off Wonder Gadot. I went to the lead past the three-furlong mark and from there she just kept on going all the way to the wire. This is a filly with great tactical speed and she loves to win."

Expert Eye wins the Mile

The $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) features older horses going 1 mile on the turf. Poker (G3) and Woodbine Mile (G1) winner Oscar Performance was sent off as the 11-4 favorite over 11-2 Expert Eye and 13-2 Analyze It. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. sent Analyze It to lead through fractions of 24.68, 49.85, and 1:15.00 while pressed by 20-1 Lightning Spear and stalked by 13-1 Happily. It was a neck back to Analyze It third. Favorite Oscar Performance broke slowly and never recovered, finishing last.

Winning jockey Frankie Dettori said, "I went 4-wide all the way, which seems to be the place to be. As we go into the straight, I asked him to pick up, and the response wasn't there for about 100 metres, I felt we were going to be a good fifth, and then he just managed to find his rhythm, and I could see the leaders stopping, and asked him for a next step, and in the last 100 yards he really got down and sprinted home. I went from despair to joy in the space of 100 yards."

It was another 3/4 length back to A Raving Beauty third.

Winning jockey John Velazquez said, "We broke well and got a good position. They kind of bunched up in there to get to the first turn and then everyone started to crowd up because the pace wasn't very fast. I liked where I was. She relaxed well where I was and was moving well past the wire the first time. From there I just bided my time with her. I followed (Wild Illusion) and she won."
