An assortment of photos mostly from Friday and Saturday at the Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs including scenic shots, opening ceremonies, and more.
Part of the opening ceremonies on Saturday included the presentation of the national flag on the racetrack held by participants from the Kentucky Wounded Heroes, the Louisville Sea Cadets and Western Kentucky University, and other uniformed military members. |
The Culver Military Color Guard was also part of the opening ceremonies each day. |
The trophies for the winning owner, jockey, and trainer. |
Churchill Downs bugler Steve Buttleman had a special purple and gold outfit both days to call the horses to the post. The horses coming out of the tunnel are from the Juvenile Fillies Turf. |
Saturday the National Anthem was sung by Irish tenor Anthony Kearns and later Shea Leparoux, wife of jockey Julien Leparoux, sang "America the Beautiful" accompanied by guitarist Tyler Anderson from the group A Lion Named Roar. |
We got to see Frankie Dettori do his famous flying dismount twice on Saturday, in the Mile (left) and the Turf (right). |
The only race I was able to go in the paddock for was the Distaff. Here is winner Monomoy Girl showing the crowd both outside and inside the walking ring. |
The lovely and talented Enable before going in the paddock for the Turf (left) and the exuberant Wonder Gadot leaping on the lead first time by in the Distaff (right). |
Flower tossing was very popular with the jockeys this weekend. To the left, Drayden Van Dyke and Stormy Liberal enter the winner's circle in a shower of petals. To the right is a fan in her homemade Justify hat, one of the few hats I bothered to shoot! |
Trainer Bob Baffert didn't have much success on Saturday. To the left are his to Distaff runners, Abel Tasman (2) and Vale Dori (8) who finished last and next to last. Both have since been retired. To the right is West Coast after finishing 7th in the Classic. He has also been retired. |
The Breeders' Cup statue with Aristides earlier in the week along with a view the Twin Spires from the paddock in the morning. |
Churchill Downs backside is known for amazing sunrises. |
Back at the Baffert barn, here is Abel Tasman with assistant trainer Jimmy Barnes on Tuesday and Juvenile winner Game Winner on Saturday morning after his victory. |
Dueling had a fit in the post parade, but jockey Manny Franco managed to hang on and get him back under control to finish 6th. I took all my shots and made this animation of the incident. It ends where it does as I was ducking for cover. :-) |
