2008 Kentucky Derby Contenders

Race day is nearly here and the list of contenders for the 2008 Kentucky Derby to be run on May 3rd is firming up nicely. The prep races are finished and the graded earnings order is set, so we know for sure who can get in. I will be updating this as jockey information becomes available and adding or removing horses as needed if they drop out due to injury or other reasons. FYI - as of Sunday April 27, Proud Spell has committed to the Kentucky Oaks instead of the Derby.

Be sure to click the link on each horse's name to view full info, stats, and a photo where available. Some jockey assignments are already known, but there will probably be a few changes once the entries are drawn on April 30. The Experimental Free Handicap, which determines who the dual qualifiers are, was released until late January. The early Triple Crown nominations closed on January 19 and late nominations closed March 29, and only those horses can enter without a huge supplement fee.

I will be at Churchill Downs starting Wednesday, so check back daily for workout photos and reports.

• Big Brown romps in the 2008 Kentucky Derby - He went off the 2.40-1 favorite and drew off to win by 4 3/4 lengths over the filly Eight Belles with Denis of Cork third. Sadly Eight Belles broke down after the race. Get the results, chart, and photos here.
