2008 Kentucky Derby and Oaks Future Wager Pool One

Pool Two of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager is now closed. As expected, Pyro wound up the favorite at only 4-1, after winning the Louisiana Derby on Saturday. Undefeated champion War Pass, off his impressive win in an allowance race, closed as the pool's second choice at 9-2 while the mutuel field of all other 3-year-olds was next at 6-1. The total pool was $325,306, the smallest Pool 2 since $306,259 was bet in 2000. In the Kentucky Oaks pool, Country Star, who has yet to start this year, closed as the 5-1 favorite over 6-1 Proud Spell, winner of the Fair Grounds Oaks. Pure Clan closed as the 7-1 third choice. $62,503 was wagered, the largest Pool 2 in Oaks Future history.
Both are two-dollar minimum wagers to win only with no refunds if your horse doesn't start in the race. Pool 3, the final pool for this year, is set for April 3-6. The 134th running of the Kentucky Derby is scheduled for Saturday, May 3 with the Kentucky Oaks the day before on May 2. Full rules and info for the wagers are available here. Acorn Stakes (G1), True North Handicap (G2), and Woody Stephens Stakes (G2) Results - Also on the Belmont undercard, Gabby's Golden Gal upset favorite Justwhistledixie in the Acorn, top choice Fabulous Strike beat defending champ Benny the Bull in the True North Handicap, and Munnings won by 5 1/4 lengths in the Woody Stephens Stakes. Brooklyn Handicap (G2) and Hill Prince Stakes - Eldaafer got up by a nose to win the Brooklyn Handicap over pacesetter Nite Light in the slop, with favorite Rising Moon third.
