With the Kentucky Derby less than a week away, the list of possible entrants is almost set now. Since the Derby field is limited to 20 entrants, some of these contenders are not going to get in the starting gate. Only the top 20 entrants based on graded stakes earnings can draw into the race, and there is no also eligible list for the Derby. All the graded preps are over now, unless someone tries to go from the Withers to the Derby on one week of rest. It looks like it will definitely take over $150,000 in earnings to make the cut this year.
Below is a list of Triple Crown nominees in order of their graded stakes earnings through April 27, 2008. Horses who are off the trail are omitted and only those with $50,000 or more in earnings are included. Proud Spell who was #2 with $880,000 in earnings has committed to the Kentucky Oaks now, so is off the list.
Behindatthebar who was #19 with $204,500 in earnings will skip the Derby and go to the Preakness next.
