On Tuesday final entries were taken and post positions drawn for the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes (G1) presented by NYRA Bets. There is no Triple Crown on the line, given that Rich Strike did not run in the Preakness, so a small field of just 8 will go to post on Saturday afternoon for the 1 1/2 mile "Test of the Champion", one complete lap of the main oval at Belmont Park.
We the People drew the rail and is the 2-1 morning line favorite off his win in the Peter Pan (G3) after disappointing in seventh in the Arkansas Derby (G1). Flavien Prat will be in the irons for trainer Rodolphe Brisset. Wood Memorial (G1) Mo Donegal is the 5-2 second choice from post 6 after finishing fifth in the Kentucky Derby (G1). Irad Ortiz Jr. rides again for trainer Todd Pletcher. Kentucky Derby upset winner Rich Strike is the 7-2 third choice, after bypassing the Preakness to prepare for the Belmont. Regular rider Sonny Leon retains the mount for trainer Eric Reed.
We do have a filly taking on the boys this year, as Nest will break from post 3 with Jose Ortiz aboard at odds of 8-1. She is trained by Todd Pletcher who is the last trainer to win the race with a filly, Rags to Riches in the 2007 Belmont Stakes.
Live television coverage on Saturday June 11 will be provided from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on NBC Sports Network and 5:00-7:00 p.m. on NBC, with post time for the Belmont Stakes scheduled for 6:44 p.m., carded as Race 11. All times are Eastern time zone.
Be sure to click the link on each horse's name to view full info, stats, and a photo. Free past performances are available from BRISnet here (look for Nest).
Note: All horses will carry 126 lbs except Nest who will have 121 lbs.
