Breeders' Cup Workouts

Date: 11/02/2016

Wednesday morning was bright and sunny for the first time this week. Although it was chilly early, it warmed up after the sun got higher. Despite the clear weather, unfortunately it was still dark when California Chrome came out just before sunrise. Tomorrow the last of the quarantine horses will finally come out, and all the Breeders' Cup runners should be here.

Here are photos for 33 of the horses on the track Wednesday morning, mostly different from Monday and Tuesday. Click the small picture to see a larger version.

horse racing breeders cup California Chrome galloped 1 5/8 miles and then schooled in the paddock. Trainer Art Sherman said, "I think horses are at their best when they're 5 years old. Chrome is bigger and stronger than ever. And, in my opinion, 1 1/4 is the best distance for him. He's got natural speed to clear horses, but can be tactical enough to lay behind the speed. He's not one-dimensional. The way he runs now, he's become a push button horse; he'll do whatever Victor (Espinoza) asks of him. I wouldn't trade places with anyone."
horse racing breeders cup Arrogate jogged 1 mile under exercise rider Dana Barnes Wednesday morning. Mike Smith rides Arrogate, a 3yo son of Unbridled's Song whose last outing was a smashing 13 1.2-length romp in the Travers. "His record speaks for itself," Smith said. "He's been training unbelievably. He'll need to repeat the race he ran in the Travers to beat California Chrome and the others, but he's got the talent. He's a big horse, but he jumped well (from the gate) at Saratoga and hopefully he will again. The 10 is actually a good spot."
horse racing breeders cup Effinex schooled in the starting gate and jogged 1 mile. Trainer Jimmy Jerkens said, "All of the horses behind him (in the 2015 Classic) were in the same spot at the half-mile pole – (American Pharoah) was off by himself – all those Grade 1 winners were all together and he was the only one who left the pack. It said a lot."
horse racing breeders cup horse racing breeders cup Keen Ice galloped an "enthusiastic" 1 3/8 miles Wednesday on the morning after arriving at Santa Anita from New York Tuesday. "He's proven in the past that he's got a big race in him. We feel like the way he's training he's coming into the race at the best that he can be. His breezes have been really good. What I like about it is that the longer he goes, the better he gets. His gallop-outs, not only in that race, but in his breezes have been very impressive. Hopefully that carries through" trainer Todd Pletcher said.
horse racing breeders cup Melatonin worked 1/2 a mile in 47.80 under jockey Joe Talamo. "It was more (rapid) than I wanted, but he did it easy. He did it in a high canter," trainer David Hofmans said. "He did it well within himself and that's all I care about." "This was just a little leg stretcher, the hard work is already done," Talamo added. "He had his ears pricked the whole time. I'm excited for him."
horse racing breeders cup Shaman Ghost galloped 1 1/4m Wednesday morning. "He got a good trip (in the Woodward). He saved ground, which is what you have to do going 1 1/8. It's unfortunate that Frosted had a bad trip, but that helped. But Shaman Ghost was very responsive the whole way. He had to duck down in a tight hole himself late and he was very brave," Jimmy Jerkens said.
horse racing breeders cup Beholder went to the track at 7 a.m. and galloped 1 1/2 mile over the main track under regular exercise rider Janeen Painter, and then schooled in the paddock. "We have had a lot of great memories with her," trainer Richard Mandella said. "Surprising us to be ready for the Breeders' Cup at 2, winning the Distaff at 3, still winning at 6; so many great memories to pick from."
horse racing breeders cup Acapulco failed to draw into the Turf Sprint so she will instead run in the Senator Ken Maddy Stakes (G3) on the Saturday undercard.
horse racing breeders cup A. P. Indian arrived at Santa Anita at 7 p.m. Tuesday and wasted little time getting familiar with the main track Wednesday morning at 8 o’clock with a mile gallop under exercise rider Moises Nava, and then walked through the paddock. “He shipped well, no problems,” trainer Arnaud Delacour said. "He trains very hard in the mornings. The post (5) is perfect and it is a small (Sprint) field. Hopefully he gets a good trip, better than the one he got at Keeneland when he had quite a bit to overcome."
horse racing breeders cup Ashleyluvssugar went to the main track at 8 a.m. and galloped 1 1/2m under exercise rider Eddie Inda. Trainer Peter Eurton is very happy with the way his pupil is coming into the Turf and shared his preference on a potential race scenario. “A relaxed front end, slow pace and sprint for home type of race is probably my only chance against guys like this; but then remember the horse with speed (Ectot) that beat Flinsthire is inside (post three) and that’s the way he runs. Is not a problem though, but I would love to have somebody to track but it doesn’t always happen with ‘Ashley.’ ‘Ashley’ likes to go sometime, but I couldn’t be happier for having Gary Stevens on him.”
horse racing breeders cup Carina Mia continues to train forwardly for conditioner Bill Mott in the mornings at Santa Anita. “She looked good training today and has every day here (at Santa Anita),” Mott said. “She’s doing well. I haven’t looked at the (Filly and Mare Sprint) on paper, but she seems like she’s a stalker type and been very effective that way. I imagine there’s a fair amount of speed in there. What we think we should do and what happens when the gate opens are two different things.
horse racing breeders cup Champagne Room took to the main track at 8 am and galloped 1 1/4m with exercise rider Max Corrales. Trainer Peter Eurton hopes for a relaxed trip in the Juvenile Fillies for the 2yo daughter of Broken Vow who drew post six in a field of 12. “She got a great draw,” Eurton said. “If somebody wants to go, she has no problem tracking, but I wouldn’t fight her to make that happen.”
horse racing breeders cup Con Te Partiro is the first also-eligible for the Juvenile Fillies Turf.
horse racing breeders cup Dancing Rags galloped 1 1/2m at Santa Anita Wednesday morning in preparation for a start in Saturday’s Juvenile Fillies. ”I run a lot of my 2-year-olds on turf first time, because they don’t get that kickback,” Graham Motion said. “She handled the grass really well, but she breezed equally well on the dirt and I wanted to stretch her out. She won very impressively when she broke her maiden and beat (Tequilita) who came back to win at Keeneland.”
horse racing breeders cup Flintshire galloped 1 3/8 miles in preparation for the Turf. Sunday at Belmont Park he worked 5f in 1:02.85.
horse racing breeders cup Gloryzapper the 4yo daughter of 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Ghostzapper, stood in the gate Wednesday morning before galloping 1 mile under exercise rider Norberto Olguin for trainer Phil D’Amato. She goes in the Filly and Mare Sprint.
horse racing breeders cup Klimt (Juvenile) jogged a mile, returning to the track for the first time following a Monday work.
horse racing breeders cup La Coronel schooled in the paddock at 10am on Wednesday. She drew post 14 in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.
horse racing breeders cup Lady Eli (Filly and Mare Turf) galloped 1 3/8 miles on Wednesday. On Sunday she breezed five furlongs in 1:03.03 over the Belmont Park inner turf course. “She’s really doing terrific,” Chad Brown said. “Her last work was outstanding. She couldn’t possibly have worked any better. I’m very excited about the way she’s coming into the race.”
horse racing breeders cuphorse racing breeders cup Metaboss (Turf) galloped on the turf course but was pulled up on the far turn by exercise rider Jose Dominguez and vanned back to his barn. X-rays revealed a sesamoid injury and he was immediately retired from racing. “He’s fractured a piece of his right sesamoid,” trainer Phil D’Amato said. “He’ll have a long life ahead of him, but he won’t be racing anymore. It’s not a life-threatening injury, but it is career-ending.”
horse racing breeders cup Miss Temple City galloped a 1 1/2m Wednesday morning after arriving at Santa Anita Tuesday.  She comes off a triumph against males in the Shadwell Turf Mile – her second victory against miles this year at Keeneland, where she captured the Maker’s 46 Mile in the spring. “I’m not surprised, and no one should be surprised,” trainer Graham Motion said. “The only thing is she had a disappointing summer, and I blame myself, as much as anything. It’s not her fault. She was compromised by awkward situations, awkward rides, whatever you call them. I knew how talented she is and I felt like I let her down a little.”
horse racing breeders cup Money Multiplier galloped 1 3/8 miles in preparation for the Turf. Sunday at Belmont Park he worked 5f in 1:03.03.
horse racing breeders cup Photo Call galloped 1 1/4m Wednesday morning. “I thought she had a good gallop, nice and settled, which is important for her, because she can get aggressive at times,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “She kept taking leads in 1 1/4, 1 1/8 and 1 1/2 races, then she kind of pulled a little bit and wasn’t finishing the way she needed to. We decided to back her up to the Mile with the idea that it would let her settle in behind horses."
horse racing breeders cup Point Piper went out for a gallop before dawn Wednesday. The 20-1 shot drew post 4 in the Dirt Mile and will have Mario Gutierrez aboard.
horse racing breeders cup Pure Sensation jogged and galloped on the main track. Christophe Lorieul, assistant to trainer Christophe Clement said, “In last year's Turf Sprint, Pure Sensation was unable to handle the soft going at Keeneland.  (He finished eighth) While this year's 6 1/2 furlongs might be at the limit of his best distance, the course is partially downhill, so that should compensate for that a bit. This horse is an old pro.  From the rail post position, he should be able to get cover early and sit off the lead.  He's a very quick and efficient horse.”
horse racing breeders cup Sea Calisi (Filly and Mare Turf) galloped 1 3/8 miles on Wednesday. She picked up her Grade 1 victory in the Beverly D. in August and was third in the Flower Bowl. “Sea Calisi is coming into the race equally as well,” Chad Brown said. “The Flower Bowl, I thought she probably needed the race. She was off an eight-week layoff and came up a little short there. I think she will move forward off that effort.”
horse racing breeders cup Syndergaard got acquainted with the Santa Anita racing surface Wednesday morning during a 1 1/4m gallop. “What I liked about (2nd in Champagne) is that it seemed to move him forward. He didn’t seem stressed by the race in any way. His appetite and energy level were back immediately and he’s come back with two very good breezes since that,” Todd Pletcher said. “I think sometimes with a horse with a lot of natural talent like he has and how easily he won his first two races that maybe that race was what he needed, in retrospect, to bring him forward. We’ll see, but I liked the way he’s bounced out of it.”
horse racing breeders cup Tara's Tango schooled in the paddock around 10am. The 8-1 shot drew post 3 and will have Rafael Bejarano aboard in the Filly and Mare Sprint.
horse racing breeders cup Theory galloped 1 1/4m Wednesday. “I thought he took things in and looked around a bit, but overall I thought he went well,” Todd Pletcher said. "What gave us the confidence to go ahead and try this was the way he finished the Futurity, and the way he galloped out afterwards was very strong. Javier (Castellano) asked him to gallop out a little bit. To me, he almost ran a mile that day. The way he came out of it and the way he’s trained hopefully will set him up for this.”
horse racing breeders cup Twilight Eclipse galloped on the main track on Wednesday. The 30-1 outsider in the Turf drew post 8 with jockey Joel Rosario.
horse racing breeders cup Undrafted exits a sixth, beaten 2 3/4 lengths, in the Woodford where the 6yo son of Purim closed from last at the top of the stretch. “He’s an older horse and you can see it, but I’m honestly expecting a huge performance,” Wesley Ward concluded. “He doesn’t have to be as good as he once was, he just has to perform as good as he was one time.”
horse racing breeders cup Wellabled galloped late in the morning. E.T. Baird rides the 15-1 longshot in the Juvenile Turf from post 9.
horse racing breeders cup Wonder Gal galloped late in the morning. Kendrick Carmouche rides the 30-1 outsider in the Filly and Mare Sprint from post 5.
horse racing breeders cup The gap attendant at Santa Anita has this pet female squirrel named Tyrianne in the booth.
