The Breeders' Cup statue in front of the grandstand fountain on Saturday. |
Although the racing takes center stage at the Breeders' Cup, there are other images and events during the day besides the horses. Here is a selection of images from Friday and Saturday to give a feel for what it was like to be there. The weather beautiful and sunny, although a bit too hot. All the sun made the Pro-Ride track very hot to stand on as well, and someone measured it at 130 degrees on the track surface.
If you want photos from a specific race or the morning works, just use the links above. There are at least nine images from each of the races in addition to the photos below. As always, click the image for a larger version.
They opened up Friday with the 3d Marine Aircraft Wing Band and colorguard. |
They not only played music, but also marched in formation. |
Shea Mitchell, daughter of trainer Mike Mitchell and a performer at Disneyland in Hong Kong, sang the National Anthem to open up Saturday. |
After she sang, the bugler played a fanfare. |
The All-Star Buglers performed the call to the post on Friday and Saturday. |
The buglers performing for the event were Jay Cohen, Mark O'Keeffe, Dan Harrington, Jason Rambler. |
Actor Kurt Russell presented awards to trainer D. Wayne Lukas, jockey Pat Day, and owner Michael Paulson for outstanding performances over the 25 years of the Breeders' Cup. Lukas leads all trainers in wins (18) and earnings ($19,645,520). Day leads all jockeys in earnings ($23,033,360) and is second to Jerry Bailey in races won with 12 to Bailey's 15. Michael's father Allen Paulson leads all owners in wins (6) and is second to Stronach Stables in earnings with $7,570,000 when only those horses racing in his name alone are considered. Add in the ones in partnership or the Allen Paulson Living Trust, and he easily tops both lists.

The post parade for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. |
The horses round the clubhouse turn in the Juvenile Fillies with eventual winner Stardom Bound the gray in the back on the outside. |
The horses round the clubhouse turn in the turf and you can see just how far behind Better Talk Now was at this point. This was his 5th appearance in the Breeders' Cup. He won in 2004 at the age of 5, was 7th in 2005, 2nd in 2006, 4th in 2007, and 8th this year. At the age of 9, this is likely his last Breeders' Cup. |
The horses break from the gate for the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. |
The horses go by for the first time in the Breeders' Cup Mile with the San Gabriel Mountains making a lovely backdrop. |
The horses for the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile walk in front of the crowded grandstand in order to turn back for the post parade. |
The crowded paddock on Friday before the Filly and Mare Sprint. I didn't have paddock access and the crowd was so bad that early on, that I didn't even try to go back again since it could only get worse later in the day, and especially on Saturday with almost twice as many people at the track. |
None of the winners actually get their trophy on Breeders' Cup day, as it has to be custom engraved with the winner's name and info. Instead, everyone poses with this dummy trophy that only says "Breeders' Cup" on it. This one was used in the winner's circle on Saturday. |
The trophy was different this year too. In the past, it was a bronze color with a gold plaque but this year it was all in silver. For comparison, you can see last year's trophy here. This one was at the post position draw on Tuesday. |
