2019 Arlington International Festival of Racing Workouts

Date: 08/09/2019

The Arlington Million (G1), the world's first million-dollar race, celebrates its 37th renewal on Saturday with a field of 10 older horses going 1 1/4 miles over the turf course at Arlington International Racecourse in the Chicago suburbs. Two more Grade 1 turf events are on the undercard, the $600,000 Beverly D Stakes (G1) for older fillies and mares going 1 3/16 miles, and the $500,000 Secretariat Stakes (G1) for 3-year-olds at the race's new distance of 1 mile (the race had traditionally been contested at 1 1/4 miles). Training hours on Friday were conducted under sunny skies with temperatures in the mid 70's.

Sistercharlie is the 8-5 morning line favorite, looking to become the first two-time winner of the Beverly D. John Velazquez breaks from post 7 for trainer Chad Brown. Brown said, "It's nice to have that extra week for her. She's trained really well since the Diana, bounced out of it in great shape. I'm very happy with her."

Bricks and Mortar is the 8-5 morning line favorite in the Million. Irad Ortiz Jr. breaks from post 3 for trainer Chad Brown. Co-owner Bill Lawrence said, "They're all tough races. We think we have a big chance but first we have to beat 'the other Chads. Then we have to worry about Aidan, and he's got some good ones, too. It's still horse racing. You've got to beat whoever shows up. The foreign breeders value turf horses more highly. At the end of the day, it's an economic decision (to sell him to Shadai Farm in Japan)." Brown added, "He's got all the tools. He's proving to be just a little faster, a little better than the horses he's with. He has that will to win, the competitive desire."

Intellogent drew post 9 in the 10-horse Million and is 12-1 morning line. New rider Florent Geroux will be in the irons for trainer Fabrice Chappet. Chappet said, "This distance I think is a perfect trip for him. He has the win going the mile, but I think he is at his best when he’s going further. He doesn’t have a great draw, but I know that Florent is familiar with Arlington. He’s much more familiar with the layout than I am, so I’m going to leave it up to him when he gets out of the gate to make a decision on where to spot him. I have nothing but confidence in Florent.”
