Ladies in hats at the Kentucky Derby and Oaks is a tradition that is probably as old as the Derby itself. From small and tasteful to large and frilly to just plain silly, you will see hats in all colors of the rainbow on women of all ages. Often they are together in groups and sometimes even the guys get into the act! Everyone enjoys the hat parade and the wearers are all glad to show them off. Here is a selection of hats I spotted at the 2009 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs for you to enjoy. Who knows, it may even give you some ideas for your own hat in the future. There were so many hats, I could have kept going forever but decided to stop after 65. Pink was very popular this year, especially on Oaks day with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure "Pink Out" that day for breast cancer awareness.
I have tried to group the hats by the major color theme. First are the multiple hat photos, then a few that I classified as "all birds must die" (excessive use of feathers) and "go big or go home" for those truly humongous hats. After those come orange/yello, neutral, blue, red, black and white, green, and finally pink. Enjoy!
