Weekend Prep Results

Date: 04/06/02

Deep stretch in the Santa Anita Derby with Came Home leading over Fonz's and Mayakovsky. Lusty Latin rallied up at the last minute to beat Mayakovsky for third.
This weekend had two major and two minor prep races. The first of the major preps was the Illinois Derby at Sportsman's Park where Repent went off the heavy favorite at odds of 0.50-1. Unfortunately it was not his day, as the lone speed horse War Emblem took it wire to wire winning by 6 1/4 lengths over Repent in 1:49.92. Repent stayed in last during the early part of the race and waited until too late to make his rally. Fonz's, who stalked the pace throughout, finished third 4 1/2 lengths behind Repent.

At Santa Anita, Came Home proved he really could get 1 1/8 miles although the time was not very impressive. Second favorite Mayakovsky went to his knees at the start but still got up to lead early. He set the pace into the stretch with Came Home stalking not far behind. As they turned for home, Came Home and Easy Grades started moving up on Mayakovsky who finally gave way in mid stretch. For a bit it looked like Came Home might have trouble disposing of Easy Grades, but he kicked it in and won by 2 1/4 lengths. Lusty Latin rallied from last to nip Mayakovsky for third in the last few jumps.

In other prep race action, the Aventura Stakes at Gulfstream Park was won by Marasca in 1:44.11 over the favorite Equality, winner of the Tampa Bay Derby last out. At Keeneland, Kenny McPeek's other top three-year-old Take Charge Lady lived up to her name and took charge around the far turn to win Ashland Stakes impressively in 1:43.29. Will she continue to the Oaks or will they decide to put her in the Derby?
